Science Is an Absurd Nightmare in MANIAC Trailer

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are joining together in a limited series on Netflix.  It’s called Maniac, and it looks like Inception, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Brazil all had a beautiful, dark, absurd drama baby.

The world of Maniac seems equally absurd and terrifying.  The trailer focuses on the two main characters, Annie Landsberg (Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Hill), who have entered a clinical trial.  Justin Theroux is their doctor.  He seems… unreliable. “The mind can be solved”  he says, which the trailer is sure to show us is met with an hilarious smattering of applause from the trial’s subjects.  Sally Field enters to see how many brains Theroux’s doctor has destroyed.  The answer?  “Zero. Roughly.”

From there the trailer throws us into a number of dreams or nightmares or alternate dimensions where Stone and Hill find themselves and each other, over and over again.  It’s some “multi-reality brain magic sh*@”  and it looks like a complete delight to witness.

Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.

The 10-episode series from Cary Joji Fukunaga will arrive on Netflix September 21st.
