Nothing like a good comic on WEBTOON before bed, right? These are the five scariest comics on the platform, and they will keep you up at night. Readers beware, and save these next six webtoons for the morning:

Yuuko’s Gloomy Days

I say this with zero exaggeration – this is the best art I’ve ever seen on WEBTOON. The author/artist is well known on Instagram for their chillingly detailed creations. Even without reading the story, just looking through the pictures would be enough to chill anyone to the bone. If you think the art is great at the start, just wait. As you read the comic, you see how the artist grew over the course of working on it.

Our story starts with an introduction to the star, Yuuko. She’s a suicidal/homicidal teenager who spends a lot of time giving us uncomfortable detail about her dread. There is a lot of mystery at the start about her home life and why she is as cold and violent as she is. She is simply indescribably gloomy.

Nocturne

Nocturne is a fairly episodic horror comic featuring different characters and stories in every other chapter. The first story features an overly innocent child in a hyper-detailed and almost realistic world. The innocence of the child and the grainy world clash, creating an uneasy feeling for the reader. That feeling only amplifies when we see the actual horror of the chapter. But we won’t be spoiling that surprise today.

Everything in this comic has a grainy texture, similar to watching something on an old TV. Sound effects are “added in” via text appearing on the comic in an eerie way. For example, the sound of a faucet manifests as a “Shhhhhh” that literally circles the room. Extra details like that add to the terror aspect.

Welfare Center

Welfare Center is a psychological thriller that follows a teenage girl in what appears to be a halfway home/psychiatric hospital. Our main character lost her memories and doesn’t know how she got there or what she has been doing while checked in as a patient for the last weeks. She barely even remembers what happened in her home life leading up to coming to the center.

Through the narrative device of her amnesia, we are introduced to her roommates at the center and slowly learn about her life. There are two things our protagonist can be certain of: Not everything is as it seems and no one can be trusted.

Everything is Fine

Don’t like the cutesy art style of this one fool you. This comic is twisted and frequently pushes the boundaries of horror. When you initially see the overly cartoony bodies with giant cat heads, you let your guard down and expect a fun silly comic.

In reality, we are met with an intense high-stakes story and a married couple that will do anything to get out of the system they are in. Hard to escape when everything is surveilling you, even your own head. Everything is NOT fine.

one of the panels from a 4 panel horror comic. This panel fetures a man looking at himself in a TV screen. There is a monster behind him

4 Panel Horror Comics

As the name suggests, 4 Panel Horror Comics tells shocking horror stories in just four panels. Each chapter is a new story with a very simplistic formula of setup and reveal. Knowing that there will be a twist at the end of every four panels can’t truly prepare you for the spooky creatures or situations. Occasionally we are treated with two-parter stories, but overall this comic is episodic with a different story in every chapter. If you’re looking for a quick spook, this one is perfect.

The Guy Upstairs

a title card for the webtoon, the guy upstairs. the main character, rozy, is pictured next to the antagonist. he is holding a knife to rozy

Rozy is an average girl just trying to get through her classes. Everything about her life seems normal. Except for her weird neighbor. Everything changes when she witnesses a gruesome murder upstairs. Or does she? This comic is scary without the need for too much gore. You’ll see gaslighting like you’ve never seen before, mind games that will make you question what you just read and a girl pushed to the edge trying to protect her best friend.
