DISCLAIMER: The following post has mild spoilers for The Remarried Empress and Like Wind on a Dry Branch
The Remarried Empress
Alphatart and Sumpul partnered together to bring the royal fantasy series The Remarried Empress to life. It follows Navier Ellie Trovi – the perfect empress. She is intelligent, courageous and socially adept. Navier is kind to her subjects and devoted to her husband, who she has known she was a child. However, things go south when her husband, the emperor, brings home a mistress. Navier tries to live with the situation and is content with living the rest of her days as the empress of the Eastern Empire. That is, of course, until the Emperor demands a divorce. She agrees under one condition; she is allowed to remarry.
The charm of The Remarried Empress is that we already know at the beginning that Navier will accept the divorce and petition to remarry. It’s getting to witness how everything went down that really draws us in. The drama uncovered as Alphatart spins this story is something you just can’t pull your eyes away from. Navier is a strong female lead who stands by her ideals even in the face of her husband’s adultery. Now, this is a period piece, so the Emperor taking a mistress isn’t something completely frowned upon, but it is the way he acts in the face of Navier that has you cheering her on in her fight to find someone worthy of her. I’d add this to your reading list now because it is a fantastic read and rumored to become an upcoming Kdrama!

Like Wind on a Dry Branch
Following the fantasy period, piece category brings us to Dalsaeowl and Hwaeum‘s Like Wind on a Dry Branch. Plague and turmoil are ripping through the empire, but widow Rieta Tristi has bigger issues. The plague has killed her husband and slave traders have kidnapped her young child when a malicious nobleman has decided that his dying wish is to have her buried alive beside his corpse. She is ready to accept this as the end of her life when they receive an unexpected visit from the outcast prince. He simply wants to settle a debt with the dead man and accepts Rieta as his payment.
Like Wind on a Dry Branch is a fairly new Webtoon but really packs quite the emotional punch. Rieta has suffered in some of the worst ways but continues to help others. She has a strong group of supportive women who live and work together in this safe haven that Killian has created. How they portray Rieta and Killian’s relationship is refreshing as well. He may pretend to be this bad boy, but he really does care about those who depend on him. He never uses his power to demand anything of Rieta but actually allows her to flourish independently and only wishes to support her. There isn’t quite a lot of world-building (yet), but if the first twenty are any indication, this will be one of my favorite series yet.
