Kieran hiding outside of a home in Purple Hyacinth.

I don’t think I can put into words how amazing Ephemerys and Sophism‘s Purple Hyacinth is. Lauren Sinclair‘s ability to detect lies has made her an outstanding officer. However, she is haunted by her inability to save her loved ones from a gruesome fate many years ago. She has dedicated her life to fighting crime by day and solving the mystery behind her parent’s death by night. Lauren will do anything to reach her goals and put an end to Phantom Scythe. Even if that means joining sides with the single most deadly assassin the city has ever seen.

Purple Hyacinth‘s Lauren Sinclair is one of my favorite female protagonists. She kicks major ass, is full of sass and just a wholesome little gem. Kieran, the assassin known as Purple Hyacinth, is the perfect partner to Lauren. He has a specific set of skills and an awfully strong jawline. They each have their own reasons to work together and may not fully trust each other, but they make a pretty great team. The mysteries, plot twists and cliff hangers will have you waiting for a new chapter every week. I also can’t forget to mention the over the top art style and stunning audio that help tell this enthralling story.

Purple Hyacinth updates every Tuesday and can be read here.

Ellie watching Ichabod crash through a window in Third Shift Society.

Speaking of great work partners, I couldn’t leave out Ellie and Ichabod from Meredith Moriarty‘s Third Shift Society. When Ellie finds herself jobless, in debt up to her ears and on the verge of eviction, she needs to turn her life around quickly. What she didn’t expect was that she would find a new job working alongside a paranormal detective. Even odder is that the paranormal detective has the head of a Jack-o-Lantern! While saving Ichabod from some supernatural horrors, Ellie learns she has her own set of abilities. Together, Ellie and Ichabod will have to work together to fight off the things that go bump in the night.

Ellie’s plight at the beginning of Third Shift Society had me saying ‘same girl same’. Even though she has supernatural abilities and works alongside a literal pumpkin head, Ellie is extremely relatable. As the story progresses we get to watch her come to understand her powers along with who she is as a person. Her succeeding at the smallest things will have you cheering. Meredith Moriarty’s supernatural world is full of mysteries that are just begging to be answered. But first I (and everone else) need to know why Ichabod has a pumpkin head!

Third Shift Society updates on Fridays and can be read here.
