Things are getting spooky this week! Our first webtoon is Not Even Bones from Rebecca Schaeffer. The story is based on her YA novel of the same name and illustrated by Alai Cinereo. The story follows Nita and her family’s mysterious business. She doesn’t hunt down supernatural beings to sell their bodies on the black market. That happens to be her mother’s day. Her job is to do the dissecting. But things take an unexpected twist and Nita ends up getting a real taste of the family business.

The story within Not Even Bones is unsettling but I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. Over the first few chapters we are introduced to Nita and her family’s unsavory business. Nita may not appear to be compassionate in the beginning, but the more we delve into her past it is easy to understand her fear of her mother and her need to follow her every whim. The story delves into darker themes surrounding death and the treatment of people who are different. And let’s not forget the monsters Nita will face along the way.

Not Even Bones updates every Friday and can read here.

In Graveweaver‘s I’m the Grim Reaper when really bad people die, they don’t just get sent to Hell. They are forced to take on the job of collecting the souls of the worst people on Earth. The story follows Scarlet, who in life was not a good person. Even the bad people paled in comparison to her. So when she meets her end and finds herself in the pits of Hell, it’s no surprise even the demons have been waiting for her. In fact, she happens to be Satan’s favorite sinner! This makes her the perfect candidate to take on the role of the grim reaper.

The story within I’m the Grim Reaper dances between humor and horror. The lightheartedness is found with how dense Scarlet can be and her interactions with Satan and Chase. But as the story turns to darker tones of death and the crimes of those who have sinned, she takes on a much more serious tone. While there should be a struggle to find the balance between humor and horror without being overly campy, Graveweaver is able to achieve it. There is a need to continue reading chapter after chapter to uncover the mysterious behind Scarlet and her companions.

I’m the Grim Reaper updates every Sunday and can be read here.
