What if you knew the moment you met your soulmate? Kat and Ali‘s In the Bleak Midwinter; people are born with a timer on their wrist the counts down to when they will meet their soulmate. Anya isn’t just struggling with the fact that her timer has 25 years left on it, but the death of her sister and her strained relationship with her brother. The stress is what eventually draws her to the idea of cryogenically sleeping away her problems. What was meant to be a year nap unknowingly becomes a 25-year slumber. To make matters even worse, she awakes to an apocalypse and war between the humans and androids.

I don’t typically binge-read webtoons when I find them after they have already started, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from In the Bleak Midwinter;. There is so much mystery hidden within the story. How did Anya’s sister die? What forced her into a 25-year slumber? Why does she have these special abilities now? And what will she do about Omega? It’s these questions that kept me reading up until the end of season one.  And even that ended on a cliffhanger! This webtoon has action, science fiction, mystery and so much more going for it.

In the Bleak Midwinter; is currently on hiatus but normally updates on Wednesday and can be read here.

Parallel City

Min questioning why people are leaving flowers on Jung’s desk in Parallel City.

No soulmates here, but what if you have a doppelganger? Someone who looks exactly like you? In Goda‘s Parallel City, fear is setting in as people report seeing their own doubles popping up. Then all of a sudden, people start disappearing. Is this just a coincidence or is something else going on here? Are the twins bad luck or is everything in their heads? Does Min need to worry about these mysterious beings after Jung magically pops back up after have gone missing? It looks like him, but something doesn’t seem quite right.

All different forms have tackled the mythology of finding your double, but Parallel City does it in style. The art is clear and simple yet does a fantastic job telling the story from chapter to chapter. Goda lists this webtoon as a mystery, but it covers so many different genres. It has zombies, action, parkour and not only doppelgangers but an entire parallel world. The parkour and zombies remind me quite a bit of Dying Light without all the heavy artillery. This is one webtoon you will want to binge from beginning to end. And season two just started so you had better get caught up quick!

Parallel City updates every Thursday and can be read here.
