Sabine Wren

Fast Facts

Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) is a Mandalorian warrior, artist, and demolitions expert who, at a young age, enrolled at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore after the Clone War ended. There she built weapons for the Empire with the belief that they would be used for good.  She designed the Arc Pulse Generator, a weapon that could incinerate Mandalorian beskar armor, and kill wearer. When the Empire ultimately used the weapon against her own people, Sabine fled Mandalore and branded a traitor by both the Empire and her own family.

After leaving Mandalore, Sabine was recruited by Captain Hera Syndulla and the Jedi Kanan Jarrus to join the rebel cause. For years they fought against the Empire and ultimately joined the much large Rebel cause. As an artist, Sabine’s phoenix symbol inspired the symbol for the Rebellion.

When tensions on Mandalore grew, Sabine went back home to face her family. Even though they had labeled her a traitor, she convinced them that she was there to help. Presenting her clan with the Darksaber, an ancient lightsaber created by the first Mandalorian Jedi, Sabine hoped that it would bring the clans together. Unfortunately, the Clans were already at war with each other, and her mother had agreed to trade the Darksaber and the Jedis to Gar Saxon, the Empire-backed leader of Mandalore. When it was clear that her clan had been betrayed, Sabine faced Gar Saxon alone in one-on-one combat, ultimately defeating him. It was at this point that Sabine chose to stay on Mandalore to find a leader worthy to wield the Darksaber and unite her people.

Sabine was instrumental in liberating the people on Lothal. After taking the Dome, the base of Imperial operations, the Rebels were successful in driving the Imperial forces out of Lothal, but the victory cam with a heavy price. The Jedi Ezra Bridger summoned a pod of purrgil to take him and Thrawn away from the battle. Unsure of where the purrrgil took them, Sabine, along with the former Jedi Padawan Ashoka Tano, decided to search for him.

The Real Deal

Sabine Wren is a fierce protector of her people and believes deeply in the cause of the Rebellion. While she has made her mistakes, she has owned up to them and has continued to fight for what she believes is right. Even when her family turned their back on her, she never gave up on them, and even though it caused her great pain to face her family, she knew she had to. She is strong-willed, brave, and resourceful, and has helped many people across the galaxy in their fight against the Empire.

Why She Matters

Sabine is another great example of the strong women present in the Star Wars universe. She faces her fears and holds true to her convictions. Throughout all the setbacks faced by the Rebellion, Sabine never gave up and instead chose to inspire people to continue the cause. While she could be a little hot-headed at times, she earned the respect of her people and her fellow Rebels. She has shown us that regardless of your past, you can make positive changes for your future. That our mistakes don’t define us, but rather are used to keep us motivated to do better. She could have remained in exile from her people, but she chose to set things right.

So, be like Sabine Wren. Be resourceful, be inventive. Own up to your mistakes and do what you can do make things better. Continue to inspire people and use your past lessons to build a better path forward.
