The first official trailer for Damien Chazelle’s First Man, starring Ryan Gosling, has arrived. It is star-studded, dramatic, full of action, reaction, danger and failure. This movie looks awesome.
Gosling plays astronaut Neil Armstrong in the time leading up to, and during the Apollo 11 spaceflight. The trailer starts with the problem. No one has ever walked on the moon before, so there is a lot of trial and error to endure. Kyle Chandler sets it up with “We’re going to have to start from scratch.” And, you see Armstrong fail and fail and fail. He’s bloodied for much of the trailer. Danger is a character in itself.

We also get a glimpse of the risks Armstrong took at home. He was a father. He had a family to leave behind if his risk/reward calculation was even slightly off. Claire Foy stands out as the fierce Janet Armstrong.
