Doing press rounds in China to get ahead of the release of their movie, Captain America: Civil War, the Russo Bros. (Joe and Anthony Russo) answered more than a few questions that give us a better idea of Spider-Man’s character in the film, as well as some of Captain America’s relationships and how Civil War ends up leading into the Infinity War films.
First of all, in talking about Bucky, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, then later Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. The Black Widow, we got some good background on who they are to our star-spangled patriot. With the Winter Soldier, they have “always interpreted the relationship as two brothers. They’re very close characters, they have a relationship with each other that is very deep. The bond between them is very strong, [which is] what motivates the storytelling.” Ultimately, they say, with Captain America, “you have a character who is searching for the only thing that he has left from his past… and that’s Bucky.”
The dynamic directing duo then goes on to say, of Black Widow, that she and Steve Rogers “care very deeply for each other… as much as any two characters in Avengers do. And I think you’ll see that again in Civil War.” He then goes on to admit that he thinks, “two of the most endearing scenes in the film are between Steve and Natasha. And, of course, that relationship will carry forward into Infinity War.”
Infinity War? How does that work exactly. Also, if just a thought, if we know that their relationship carries over into Infinity War, does that mean we also now know that Captain America doesn’t die in Captain America: Civil War?
But before we get to the granddaddy of finales in Infinity War, let’s talk Spider-Man. The two of them are very excited about him. In comparing him to the other two versions of Spider-Man we’ve seen in Tobey Macguire and then in Andrew Garfield, “This is a completely new version of Spider-Man that’s introduced in Civil War. It was very important to use that we go younger with the character because what we love about Spider-Man is that he’s still a high school student. That’s part of his vulnerability and it’s what makes him special in the Marvel Universe; he’s very unique.”
So they want to bring youth, rash inexperience and an innocent morality to the team. His heart and dedication to the good fight despite having no real talent for it outside of the radioactive spider bite is what makes him so vulnerable. He doesn’t have armor, he doesn’t have a giant shield or a healing factor or years of training — this thing JUST happened to him and now he’s trying to do the right thing.
They went on to say that they also wanted to look at con-temporizing Spider-Man, asking, “‘Who is Spider-Man today?’ A lot of times when you get interpretations of Spider-Man, they’re very nostalgic to the origins of the character. Sometimes there’s an old-fashioned patina to the tone of who Spider-Man is. We wanted to think about who is Spider-Man today if he’s living in Queens, what’s the texture of his life like, what’s the texture of his relationship with his aunt who lives with him. How can we make the relationship and character very contemporary? That’s our goal with the character.”
Not 100% certain what this means beyond seeing Peter Parker having to deal with the crueler aspects of social media or living in a frightened, security-crazy post-9/11 world, but what we DO know is that it appears we’ll definitely be seeing Marisa Tomei as Aunt May in Civil War!
Now, finally, what do they say about Infinity War? In being asked about the stakes for the films, they say, “The stakes of both Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War movies are gonna be very high, and there will be a price to pay [for?] a lot of characters.”
Joe then went on to say, “That’s the whole point of cumulative storytelling. We’re going to go on emotional journeys with these characters. We’ve got a lot invested in the emotion. We have responsibilities to be mindful of how these people feel about the characters and, at the same time, we also have a responsibility to carry through on the storytelling. As filmmakers, we believe in stakes. You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay in Civil War. There will be characters that… [Inaudible].”
Characters that what!? Die? Get married? Win a blue ribbon at a science fair!? It’s fair to assume that he was saying a character dies at some point in the film, which is something we’ve all assumed seeing as Captain America is actually assassinated at the end of the Civil War saga as he’s brought to trial.
Finishing up the conversation, they say that for Infinity War, “the stakes will be raised to a whole new level” and that “people should expect to be shocked when they see the movies.”
What does that even mean? Do the Avengers actually lose and does Thanos destroy the entire cosmos!? Because, that would be unexpected!
