RUMOR: Jared Leto JOKER Films Cancelled

Still of Jared Leto as the Joker in Suicide Squad.

In a world where superheroes reign, comic film projects come and go. Between the two titans of comics, DC appears to be the one struggling to keep fans (and themselves) interested in projects they’ve announced. With films such as Green Lantern, the stand-alone Cyborg film, and many others – the company has a bit of a track record for dropping projects. The latest on the chopping block? The stand-alone Joker film starring Jared Leto along with the planned Joker and Harley Quinn film.

According to an article over at Forbes, the two films have fallen “to the wayside”. There could be numerous reasons why this is, of course. The market is currently flooded with films in the comic world. It would have to compete within DC itself, let alone the rest of the studios vying for a piece of that sweet, sweet box office gold.

DC is currently in post-production on another Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix. So why have the Leto version come back for his own film, especially if it’s a success? Additionally, the new Birds of Prey film features Harley Quinn predominantly without her green haried beau. In fact, they seem to have broken up so there would be no need to back pedal. The upcoming Suicide Squad sequel written and directed by James Gunn doesn’t seem to have a place for Leto’s Joker either. Of course there’s also scheduling issues as well, as Leto has moved on to Marvel‘s adaptation of Morbius.

However if you really break it down, it appears that they have fallen off the schedule because they didn’t gain enough fan interest. I’ve personally expressed my great disinterest in these films. His Joker was a tatted-up mobster with no mystery, jokes, or charisma that treated Harley Quinn as an object. A Joker and Harley film as well as a stand-alone film with Leto would end up clogging up the market and less people would go see them. Could DC attempt to bring those story lines back down the line? Sure. With the upcoming slate though, it seems unlikely. These films would do best to rest in the pile of unfinished films.

What do you think about these Joker films being cancelled? Are you as relieved as we are or wanted to see more from him? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more DC news.
