Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we spotlight strong women and nonbinary folks who inspire us. This includes fictional characters in geeky media and creators as well. They are a prime example of empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Doctor Who, particularly Ruby Sunday’s arc.
Ruby Sunday
Fast Facts:

Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) was born to unknown parents on Christmas Eve, 2004. Her biological mother dropped her off on the church’s doorstep on Ruby Road. Then, her adoptive mom, Carla Sunday (Michelle Greenidge), took her in and raised her. When Ruby meets the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) in “The Church on Ruby Road,” we learn she resides with her mother and grandmother, Cherry Sunday (Angela Wynter).
After the Doctor asks her to travel time and space with him, Ruby embarks on out-of-this-world adventures. She saves people and planets. However, the specter of Ruby’s parentage looms large throughout all this. Not to mention, it starts inexplicably snowing when Ruby is around.

Later, the Doctor and Ruby return to London to team up with UNIT. UNIT Commander-in-Chief Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) lets Ruby and the Doctor use her Time Window to recreate the day Ruby was born. Unfortunately, feeding the CCTV footage of the church on Ruby Road into the Time Window manifests a dark entity, Sutekh, who vows to wreak destruction on the universe.
The Real Deal:

Ruby is kindness personified. She possesses great depth of feeling and is a stellar listener. She’s also incredibly tenacious, refusing to wave that white flag. Ruby will fight tooth and nail to protect her loved ones and save strangers from peril.
When the Doctor vanishes in “73 Yards,” Ruby navigates the Welsh coast alone, finds her way home and saves the world from a nuclear weapons-obsessed politician. She pulls this off while armed with that tenacity and her immense intellect. Her bravery fuels her, even when the deck is stacked against her.

Ruby also boasts a wicked sense of humor and a jovial spirit, which vibes perfectly with the Fifteenth Doctor’s personality. They truly are a dynamic duo.
Why She Matters:

Ruby is a multifaceted, complex woman with more exposure to the wider universe than most. Despite being only 19 years old, Ruby possesses a maturity well beyond her years while retaining a fun-loving demeanor. She loves with all her heart and continuously gets back up when the waves knock her down.
Her strong moral compass, firm convictions, empathy and intelligence make her the perfect companion to join the Doctor on his adventures. Ruby is a superhero in her own right.
