The CW has cast Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman, for the upcoming CW 2018 Arrowverse Crossover and developing Batwoman series. Rose is best known for her role in Orange is the New Black. She has since moved on to feature films, appearing in John Wick: Chapter 2 and Pitch Perfect 3.

Deadline reports that the CW’s Batwoman series in still in the scripting stage. The crossover will introduce the character, but will not serve as the pilot for the series. If the series is picked up, Batwoman would be the first LGBTQ+ lead character in a superhero series. Rose herself identifies as a lesbian and gender fluid.

The series will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, and Caroline Dries. Dries also serves as a writer for the series. Here is the official logline for Batwoman.
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, she soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
The Batwoman series should premiere in 2019-2020 season. The Arrowverse Crossover, with stars from Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash is set for December 2018.
