Rosario Dawson is no stranger to working in comic book universes on television or, in the medical field in said comic book universes as she did when she played Claire Temple (Night Nurse) on Marvel’s Daredevil, Luke Cage Iron Fist and The Defenders. Now she has been cast in the HBO Max pilot DMZ as medic Alma Ortega. Even more exciting, Ava DuVernay is set to direct the pilot episode and will serve as executive producer. Roberto Patino will serve as showrunner.
The series will be based the DC’s Vertigo comic DMZ created by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli. According to Deadline, DMZ takes place in the near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone (DMZ – hence the title of the series), destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world. Dawson will play fierce medic Alma Ortego, who goes on a harrowing journey of saving lives while desperately searching for her lost son. As she contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone here has lost…hope.

We really love that Dawson in a lead role on this one. Right now, only the pilot is to be filmed and only Dawson has been cast. There’s no news on any series pick-up. Stay tuned to Geek Girl Authority for more news on DMZ!
