What happens when you mix Ron Moore (For All Mankind, Battlestar Galactica) with Disney Plus? You get magic! The prolific writer and producer will be at the helm for a Magic Kingdom TV Universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Moore is already curating the first project of a hopeful franchise for Disney Plus.
Now, said project is titled The Society of Explorers and Adventurers. The Hollywood Reporter reveals it’ll focus on themed lands and characters from Disney’s parks/classic films. In this series, they exist in another reality. Should the show prove to be successful, Moore will continue to build on the property and oversee it for the streaming giant.
Moore is most known among sci-fi fans for bringing the critically lauded Battlestar Galactica reboot to life, which ran from 2004 to 2009. His other credits include executive producing Starz favorite Outlander, Amazon’s Electric Dreams and recently For All Mankind. The Apple TV Plus sci-fi drama poses the question, “What if the Soviet Union beat the United States to the Moon in 1969?” Season Two made its debut on February 19.
The producer/scribe is a Disney superfan, so this appears to be the right move for him. Here’s a snippet from a podcast interview Moore did with The Hollywood Reporter:
I decided to go there mostly because my childhood was built around a lot of things that were Disney. I am a huge fan and aficionado of the Disneyland park in Anaheim to the point where I would go there by myself periodically and ride the rides. The opportunity for me to get to work on a lot of the classic IP that Disney has and things in their library that meant so much to me as a child growing up and that I have shared with my children ultimately was just something I couldn’t pass up.
The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, along with a Magic Kingdom Universe, marks a massive deal for Disney Plus. Of course, Disney Investor Day revealed the streamer’s plans to expand and broaden its properties. I’m curious to see where Moore will go with the MKU. Battlestar Galactica is one of my favorite shows. While this is quite the departure in terms of genre, I’ve no doubt Moore will inject a unique twist with a pinch of Disney magic.
Could the Magic Kingdom Universe eventually cross over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Maybe someday.
