That’s right! According to Variety, the veteran directing will be taking on the mantle. While we were shocked with the sudden announcement of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller leaving the Han Solo film, the replacement is here quickly. Ron Howard is in for quite a ride.

According to the article, Howard is set to start work immediately. It’s not clear how much he’s in-the-know of the film prior to his start. In fact, 3 quarters of the film is already filmed. There are scheduled reshoots for later in the year, so there’s time for the production to get on it’s feet again. We’re also unsure how the directing credit will go. But at least the film isn’t out for long.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also released a statement on StarWars.com

At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.

While it’s a bit troubling that they waited so long to pull Lord and Miller out, at least we know Lucasfilm is unafraid to find a new direction if it’s not working. I do think a Howard directed piece is best for the circumstances. We’re not sure how much of a difference there will be, but at least the ship is being helmed. And maybe we’ll get a damn title name soon!
