Greetings, friends, and welcome everyone to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Geek Girl Authority has one last suggestion if you are planning a video game-themed Valentine’s Day. Rocket League Sideswipe is a nitro-fueled racing/soccer hybrid that will keep you on the edge of your seat. So strap on your seat belts, grab your ride or die and get ready for a wild ride!

Rocket League Sideswipe

Rocket League Sideswipe is the mobile adaption of the popular racing soccer game Rocket League. This micro version was developed by Psyonix, published by Epic Games and released in 2021. Sideswipe puts you behind the wheel of incredibly fast cars with only one purpose, to score more soccer goals than your opponent. The gameplay has been simplified to a more 2D style rather than a full-on 3d experience like its console version.

Players have two minutes to use their vehicle to hit an enormous ball into the opponent’s goal on the opposite side of the screen. Jump, spin, flip, fly or turbo boost; whatever it takes to get that ball into the goal. If the score is tied at the end of the round, overtime begins and ends once the next goal is made.

For the competitive types, there are ranked matches in which you can rise (or fall) through the ranks for epic rewards at the end of the season. See if you have what it takes to go from Bronze all the way to Grand Champion. If you are more of a chill player, casual play lets you play matches without the risk of losing precious ranks.

You have the option to play alone in one-on-one bouts or join your favorite player two for a doubles match. Epic Games makes it easy to partner up with your friends for a quick round. Ranked matches have a special 2v2 option which usually features a different sport like volleyball and changes with each season.

Casual play features a special 2v2 game with unique rules that also rotates on a timer. Currently, the special match is Mutator Madness with funky modifiers like tiny cars or a super bouncy ball. Mutator Madness also grants double XP right now so keep an eye out for those special matches.

Earn rewards for every match played in ranked or casual mode. The great news is that you get rewards even if you lose so it isn’t an uphill drive to get seasonal swag. Season rewards include various types of vanity items or money to buy more vanity items. They can be anything from new skins to car toppers. I unlocked the Robovisor topper which I immediately equipped because it reminds me of Geordi La Forge.

Of all the mobile games I have played, I have never seen a game with absolutely no in-game purchases. Sideswipe is free to play and has no in-game purchases, none. All items and currencies are earned simply by playing the game. This made my little gamer heart and my wallet very happy.

Sideswipe is made for one to two players making it a great choice for solo drivers and couples alike. The graphics and physics of Sideswipe are just as good as its console counterpart and the simplified play style doesn’t take away from the quality of the game. If anything the matches are way more intense because they are so short and sweet. Rocket League is known for its high quality electronica soundtrack and Sideswipe is no exception. The music really suits the gameplay well and adds to the adrenaline rush.

Sideswipe is not without its flaws, the controls can be sketchy sometimes and take a little getting used to. I noticed on my Samsung Fold 5 that there was one button that flat-out would not work when unfolded so I played on the smaller screen. Sometimes things get a little too chaotic and it is easy to lose your car in the craziness but that can be part of the fun.

Overall, Rocket League Sideswipe is one of the most action-packed and fast-paced games I have played in a long time. It really captures what makes Rocket League so much fun and puts it in your pocket. I love the game mode options and how easy it is to play with a partner. But my favorite thing of all is that you can play the game without spending a single penny. There is no pay-to-win aspect and a player’s abilities are based purely on skill. You don’t see that much in gaming these days.

Rocket League Sideswipe is a crazy fun time and will bring out the potty mouth in the best of us, especially when you accidentally score on yourself. So what are you waiting for? Score this Valentine’s Day with Rocket League Sidewipe.

Rocket League Sideswipe is available for free in the Google Play Store and App Store.

Take it easy and play it safe, gamers.
