Over here at GGA, we just watched the film with robots called Automata. It was lackluster to say the least.

Last week, we watched a trailer for Chappie which I, myself, am very excited about. There are some enticing ingredients in that trailer: Neil Blompkamp who helmed District 9, Sigourney Weaver, Hugh Jackman and Sharto Copley. Chappie is more of a Pinocchio tale, where a robot gets feelings. I’m crossing my fingers on that one.

Chappie

Now, we have a trailer for Robot Overlords. In addition to a cool name, this film has Gillian Anderson (you know, X-Files, Hannibal, writer of Science Fiction) and Sir Ben Kingsley.

This is more of a Cyberdyne Systems/Skynet kind of Artificial Intelligence except from another galaxy and with nice clear british voices. This film also has the Borg. No, that’s not true, they just have a vehicle in the trailer that look like these Borg Cubes:

Here’s the official plot summary for Robot Overlords

Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy; survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they venture outside.

In robot-occupied Britain, city centres are devastated and a gang of teenagers live in a seaside town constantly under robot threat. Intimidating sentries patrol the streets; snipers are merciless death machines. The Mediator is deceptively childlike but unnervingly coercive. The robot base is The Cube, a massive mother-ship that dominates the horizon.

Now here’s the official plot summary for Chappie:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

Which movie will be better? Chappie or Robot Overlords?

I have no idea but I will watch both.

Here’s what I really wish. I wish there could be a mash-up between the two movies and in this new film, Sigourney Weaver and Gillian Anderson hate each other and hate all robots but then in the end they realize they have to work together and they do a super team up and defeat the evil Robot Overlord named Chappie! And then they both get a personal Hugh Jackman robot as a prize for saving humanity. And scene.
