DISCLAIMER: This review of the first two episodes of Rick and Morty Season 7 is entirely spoiler-free. Proceed with ease.
Wubba lubba dub-dub, y’all. Rick and Morty is finally back on our screens for more sci-fi shenanigans. Now, I want to address the Justin Roiland-shaped elephant in the room. I had access to the first two episodes of the season; however, I do not know who’s voicing our titular grandfather-grandson duo following Roiland’s departure. I assume this info was withheld from journalists to maintain the element of surprise. We’ll all find out on Sunday, though.
The Voices
With that out of the way … let’s get to the voices. While the actor for Rick sounds almost identical to Roiland, he sounds a little flat in the opening moments of Season 7, Episode 1, “How Poopy Got His Poop Back.” (I think you can guess who’s in the premiere based on this title.) A certain energy and vocal versatility are missing, especially when the actor expresses Rick’s excitement or agitation. The lower-register dialogue sounds the most like Roiland.
That said, as episode one continues and even into Season 7, Episode 2, “The Jerrick Trap,” Rick’s actor settles into a nice groove that feels more like Roiland with every scene. You get used to it rather quickly. He even throws in a burp for good measure.

As for Morty, there isn’t too much of him in the season premiere. Episode two is where he really shines. Morty’s voice actor nails his nervous, nasally qualities. I’d argue it’s easier to capture the nuances and vocal ticks for Morty than Rick, but regardless, the performer does a serviceable job.
The Episodes
Episodes one and two fire on all cylinders regarding comedy and action. We also get fun fan-favorite character cameos, plot surprises and interesting team-ups. However, I couldn’t help thinking a significant ingredient was missing from the equation: Rick and Morty.
Part of this show’s magic is the chemistry, conflict and camaraderie between our two leads (even though Roiland was voicing both characters). I’m sure we’ll see them interact more in the coming episodes. But it would’ve been great to test the new actors’ chemistry together for more than a few minutes at a time.

Thankfully, Rick and Jerry get some hang time. It’s always a blast when these two polar opposites butt heads, and Season 7 provides plenty of that. As for the episodic narratives, Rick and Morty keeps things fresh by exploring different avenues and introducing delightful new story ideas. We also see the seeds of an overarching seasonal arc planted in the second episode.
As per Rick and Morty‘s usual, there’s a heaping helping of gore, a few f*ck yous and the exploration of new alien worlds. I won’t reveal any spoilers but expect to see things you haven’t seen on this show yet.
All in all, Season 7 is off to a solid start. It takes a second to get going, mainly where the new voices are concerned, but it’s far less jarring than Solar Opposites Season 4. After a few minutes of growing pains, you’ll sink into this as if nothing’s out of place.
