The SDCC 2021 blessings keep on coming! This time, the cast and crew of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty chatted with moderator Brandon Johnson about all things Season Five. Johnson was joined by co-creator/executive producer Dan Harmon, executive producer Scott Marder, Sarah Chalke (Beth), Chris Parnell (Jerry) and Spencer Grammer (Summer).
Now, the panelists discussed the inspiration behind Mr. Nimbus, Rick’s archnemesis, who was introduced in the Season Five premiere. Surprising no one, we learned that David Bowie inspired Nimbus’ overall look.
Additionally, Season Five brought on a slew of changes for the Smith/Sanchez crew. For starters, the family is embarking on more adventures together. Rick and Morty, our eponymous pair, are experiencing some relationship friction. Thus, we see Rick and Summer tag-teaming it up.

Next, Johnson unearthed the decoy dilemma as seen in “Mortyplicity.” Harmon explained that the decoy family idea sat on the back burner until this season. He equated “home invasion” to what it’s like to have a decoy.
In typical Harmon fashion, he spewed a handful of metaphors in response to whether or not he’d save his decoy. There’s plastic on furniture involved. And shoes? Cars are like shoes, but for your body.
Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered what Jerry’s go-to karaoke song would be, then wonder no longer. Parnell revealed that “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot would be plucked from Jerry’s karaoke arsenal in an instant.
Then, Johnson moderated a superlative-esque game wherein each person voted about which Rick and Morty character would be “most likely” to do something. Here are the results:
- Most Likely to Send an Order Back to the Kitchen: Jerry
- Most Likely to Show Up on 90 Day Fiancé: Summer
- Most Likely to Cry When First Child Is Born: Jerry
- Most Likely to Donate to Charity: Jerry
- Most Likely to Commit to Self-Growth: Beth
- First Person to Start Eating People on a Desert Island: Rick
- Best Dental Hygiene: Beth
- Most Likely to Live in a TikTok House: Summer
- Most Likely to Have Milk for Dinner: Jerry

I think these all track. If this were a competition, Jerry would win! Before the panel ended, we had two special guests: Rick and Morty! Justin Roiland, who lends his voice to both characters, called Johnson and proceeded to have a conversation with himself. As one does. Wubba-lubba-dub-dub!
