Director and Writer Rian Johnson on the red carpet

Before the release of The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson was given the opportunity to make even more Star Wars movies. We learned that the writer/director intended to make a new trilogy that would step away from Skywalker saga. Now, thanks to Observer, we know a little more about what he has planned.

During the Toronto International Film Festival, Johnson spoke a bit about his upcoming films, including the murder-mystery Knives Out. When asked about Star Wars, he spoke of the excitement and challenge of doing something new in the universe. “I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting and then figure out what it’s going to be,” he started. “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters. What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know the way that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

Now we already knew that the film wouldn’t focus on characters from the Skywalker saga. What the most exciting part of what he says is figuring out what the essence of Star Wars is. For some, it’s good vs evil, Jedi vs Sith, Rebellion vs Empire, etc. For others, it’s a story about one family that changes the fate of their galaxy. What comes after that, though? In order for this franchise to continue to thrive, we need new stories with new characters. It looks like Johnson is going to bring us into new era of films and the endless possibilities are incredibly exciting.

What do you think of his comments? Are you looking forward to a new era of films in the galaxy far, far away or is the Skywalker saga just too close to your heart? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news. The Skywalker saga ends with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on December 20th, 2019.
