Rian Johnson is coming back to Lucasfilm! In some of the best news I’ve heard in months, director and writer Rian Johnson will be creating a brand new trilogy separate from the Skywalker saga, StarWars.com reported. While there is no other news about the films, we learned just a little bit about them.
Since promotion for The Last Jedi started, Lucasfilm (and especially Kathleen Kennedy) have been showering Johnson with praises. Everyone seems incredibly excited about his vision for the 8th saga film. So it’s not a huge surprise that he’s coming back. What is surprising is that he’s bringing not one or two films but three! In a statement released, we learned about the project.
Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
“Star Wars lore that has never been explored before” gets me all giddy and excited. What kind of area are we going to? Are we exploring Outer Rim territory? What sort of mischief will these characters get up to? Oh I can’t wait to hear more about the project! Kennedy was very enthusiastic about it.
We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Johnson and his collaborator Ram Bergman also released a statement, expressing their joy at returning to the galaxy far, far away.
We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films
Frankly, I feel as excited about this as Kennedy is. Lucasfilm seems absolutely giddy about Rian’s work, which is really encouraging as a fan. We want to hear how well things are going and how they have a great movie ahead. Because of this, I’m not worried about The Last Jedi being bad, I’m worried that The Last Jedi won’t exceed my expectations, given the company’s praise. However, they must be completely confident in order to give him his own set of films. And because of this – I’m confident and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
