Rey and Luke Are the Heart of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Says Director

Erin Lynch

I love hearing this. In an interview with NYT, director and writer Rian Johnson was able to talk about his upcoming film – Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While he doubled down on saying that he believes Luke is the last Jedi (at least for now), he shared an interesting tidbit.

When NYT asked about whether or not Luke is the one saying that the Jedi need to end, he gave an even deeper answer. While we’ve been focusing on Rey’s character journey and how different Luke will be in the film – we haven’t really focused on the two of them together. And more specifically what Rey represents with the Jedi.

The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, What is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?

Frankly, I’m really excited hearing this. Not just because we didn’t really get to see Luke in The Force Awakens, but also because I’m excited for their development. Because Luke’s outlook on the Jedi has soured deeply, how will that influence her training and their relationship? Will Rey dig her heels in and demand to be a Jedi and Luke refuses? Luke is more than likely torn between training someone in the ways of the Jedi while also wanting them to end.

There’s so many possibilities. And with such a rocky relationship, at least at the beginning, how will they get over that hurtle together? That will be the most interesting bit to explore. But they will be master and apprentice. Whether or not they come together in harmony will be another story. But to know their relationship is the heart is just exciting to me as a fan of both characters.
