It seems that 2017 has been a good year for remastered games. From StarCraft Remastered, to the remastered Neverwinter Nights game, developers have been tapping into their catalogs and reviving games that have been gone for too long.

Today Square Enix announced that the popular 1993 JRPG Romancing SaGa 2 will be coming digitally to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Xbox One, and Windows 10 on December 15.

Fans of the science fiction JRPG series will be excited to see this game make its comeback on the modern consoles. A little background of the series, Romancing SaGa 2 is actually the fifth game of the SaGa series which started with The Final Fantasy Legend, a game that was released in the late 1980s for the Game Boy. Following The Final Fantasy Legend was Final Fantasy Legend II and Final Fantasy Legend III which were both released for the Game Boy. While the games had Final Fantasy in the title, they weren’t exactly tied to the Final Fantasy series. After the release of Final Fantasy Legend III, Square Enix released the Romancing SaGa and SaGa Frontier games over the course of 20 years. The latest release was 2016’s SaGa: Scarlet Grace which is only available in Japan.

In all there are 10 games in this series, so the release of Romancing SaGa 2, arguably one of the better games in the series, bodes well for the other games. Is it possible to see The Final Fantasy Legend or the subsequent games make their return? Maybe, but I suppose we’ll have to see how this game does when it’s released.

If you are in the market for an old style JRPG, then this game might be something to check out. The enhanced features of the game include updated graphics and audio, new character classes, a new dungeon, and a “new game+” feature which allows players to “carry over useful character attributes and items into a new game, enabling players to obtain missed items, or save previously sacrificed lands and companions.”

You can watch the announcement trailer below and check out some new screenshots in the Gallery. Overall the game looks like a lot of fun and it is very much in the style of the old school Square Enix games. Count me in to pick up the PC version of this game next week.
