DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Reginald the Vampire episode “Halfway to a Threeway” has spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

Welcome back, baby vamps! “Halfway to a Threeway” is another charming outing for this series, brimming with surprise twists and character interactions. Sarah dances dangerously close to discovering Reginald’s undead secret. She encounters Maurice, Angela and Nikki without knowing they’re vampires. Then, to make matters worse, she tries to kill Reginald while under Angela’s glamour before they have sex. Sarah and Reginald’s dating track record is not great, folks.

While it’s not a fast-paced, action-packed episode, it’s still delightfully entertaining and moves some narrative chess pieces into intriguing places. Plus, that ending! Here’s hoping Reggie learns Sarah was only glamoured.

Ready to delve into “Halfway to a Threeway”? Let’s get to it.

We open right where we left off, with Reginald’s (Jacob Batalon), Sarah’s (Em Haine) and Nikki’s (Christin Park) karaoke performance. Maurice (Mandela Van Peebles), Angela (Savannah Basley) and Ashley (Marguerite Hanna) are in the audience. Maurice and Angela look none too pleased with the unexpected arrival of Nikki.

Maurice pulls Reggie aside and explains why Nikki’s presence is a bad thing. He reveals that Angela hired Nikki to kill Reginald. Now he and Reggie both have targets painted on their backs. Then, Reggie finds Sarah comforting Nikki at the bar. He ushers Sarah outside and away from the formidable vampire assassin. Ashley replaces the pair, whipping out a tissue to wipe the single blood tear off Nikki’s face.

Nikki asks them why her heart’s racing, which Ashley dubs a panic attack. They explain how Nikki can slow her heart rate, but she dips in a flash before Ashley finishes their breathing tutorial. Meanwhile, Reggie and Sarah share their first kiss (Squee!) on their walk home. Finally! Nikki watches the lovebirds from afar.

Later, Angela and Maurice have a chat outside the karaoke bar. Maurice doesn’t believe Angela can control Nikki, especially since the latter failed to complete her task. What would the vampire council think of Angela’s illegal maneuver? Angela wonders whether Sarah knows Reggie’s secret while not-so-subtly threatening her in the process. Maurice demands that Angela stand down (but we know she won’t).

Next, Nikki confronts Reggie in his apartment. She lifts him in the air by the neck in one swift movement — like the killer she is. Nikki asserts that Reginald’s singing voice is a gift from the angels. Initially, Reggie denies this, but once Nikki decides to kill him, he backtracks, claiming his voice is courtesy of the angels. It’s abundantly clear Nikki is smitten with Reginald.

Meanwhile, Sarah invites Maurice for tea after the pair run into each other outside. Sarah gushes about her and Reginald’s first kiss. Maurice realizes how much these crazy kids love each other. Sarah confesses her concern that their open book policy is one-sided, as Reginald doesn’t share much of himself with her. Of course, it’s the whole vampire thing. Right? Maurice encourages her to support Reggie.

Nikki reveals her feelings for Reggie to Angela, much to the latter’s dismay. Oh, and she’s not killing Reginald. Why? It’s all under the table, which gives Nikki some wiggle room in her contract with Angela. Maurice helps Reginald train for the looming Assessment. He tells Reggie that Mike decided to nest elsewhere, neatly omitting the bit about Mike spying on him at Angela’s behest. Maurice also expresses his approval regarding Regarah? Sarinald? We need a good ship name for Reginald and Sarah.

Nikki wears a white button-down shirt with a black vest and red bowtie while standing behind a bar and looking serious in Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, "Halfway to a Threeway."

At the Slushy Shack, Ashley notices Sarah’s effervescent glow. Ashley urges Sarah to make the first move re: sex. Why? Because Reggie isn’t known for taking action. Then, Nikki wanders into the Slushy Shack, claiming she must destroy her romantic competition. Ashley pulls her aside and steers her clear of the path of murder. Ashley learns that Nikki carries a torch for Reginald. This knowledge breaks their heart, but they advise Nikki to make her feelings known to Reginald. Well, slowly, if possible. Nikki declares her intention to confess her feelings to Reggie that night.

After Nikki departs, Sarah thanks Ashley for their advice, revealing she plans to make the moves on Reggie. Ashley looks speechless. They probably didn’t expect to inadvertently direct two women toward the same man on the same day. Real talk: I want Nikki and Ashley to be a thing. Reginald’s taken!

Reginald encounters Angela while outside later that night with his bike. Angela procures a document for Reggie to sign, revealing that Logan the [insert adjective here] must push the Assessment up one month due to scheduling conflicts. Uh-oh. That means our baby vamp only has one month to prepare. Angela fails to address this Assessment update without dropping a few fatphobic insults. Ew. C’mon, girl. Be better than that. That said, Angela’s wardrobe is envy-inducing, and I’d like to raid her closet.

Later, Reginald finds Sarah on his doorstep. She enters his apartment without a word and starts kissing him. When we think Reggie might reveal he’s a vampire, he tells Sarah he’s a virgin. And there’s no shame in that! In the following scene, we see Penelope (Georgia Waters) and Mike (Ryan Jinn) entangled on the couch after having some sexy fun times. Penelope expresses her delight in seeing him return. Mike claims he’s there to make amends. He feels remorse for putting Reginald in danger and proclaims his objective to prevent Angela from killing him.

Meanwhile, Sarah reassures Reggie that she admires him for waiting for the right person. She doesn’t shame him for being a virgin, which is lovely. Sarah believes it’s high time for that third date. Sure, the first two were riddled with vampire shenanigans, but the third time’s a charm.

Speaking of sexy fun times, we see Angela cuddling with Gemma (Jody Thompson) after sex. I love the canonical sexual fluidity of the vampires in this universe. Angela vents to Gemma, a human, about the Reginald situation and Nikki’s failure. Side note: judging by their conversation, it seems like Angela and Gemma have been at least having sex for a hot minute — maybe a few decades. Anyway, after unloading her burdens on Gemma, Angela glamours her.

Sarah wraps her arms around Reginald while the duo looks into each other's eyes in Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, "Halfway to a Threeway."

Then, Reggie has a vividly-colored dream featuring Sarah with Nikki’s hairstyle and a blood cocktail poured generously over a stack of pancakes. Nikki herself also makes an appearance. After he wakes, Reginald is taken aback when Nikki enters his home with a gift. He finds a human heart inside a beautiful gift box. What a very literal interpretation of love!

Maurice is still tinkering around with his herb of the cross concoction to take out Angela while the latter visits Sarah at the Slushy Shack. However, we cut to the next scene before seeing the damage Angela inflicts on the poor unsuspecting Sarah. Later, Sarah and Reginald have dinner in a swanky hotel. As it turns out, Sarah booked a room for them that night, much to Reggie’s delight. Unfortunately, Nikki’s unexpected appearance working as a bartender puts a damper on his mood.

Reginald excuses himself and urges Nikki to leave. But she’s still working her shift! Nikki gives Reginald a glass of alcohol-spiked blood courtesy of a human patron sitting at the bar. Sarah takes a sip of it, completely unaware that it’s blood. Our lovebirds make their way to their hotel room for some sexy fun. Sarah retreats to the bathroom to change. While there, we see a flashback of Angela glamouring Sarah at the Slushy Shack to kill Reginald. Sarah removes a wooden stake from inside the toilet tank.

Next, Sarah emerges from the bathroom with the stake behind her back. She asks Reggie to close his eyes while he’s on the bed. Before she delivers the killing blow, Nikki swoops in to save the day. She throws Sarah aside and whisks Reginald out of the room. Nikki believes that Sarah is a vampire slayer, but Reggie refuses to believe this. Not Sarah!

Reginald reaches for Sarah's hand across the dinner table in a restaurant in Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, "Halfway to a Threeway."

Sarah storms out into the hallway, her stake raised high. Nikki holds her in place and tosses Sarah back into her hotel room. Nikki leads Reggie to her room and asks him to drink her blood to calm his nerves. Then, Reginald sinks his fangs into Nikki’s neck. The pair move in for a kiss when the episode cuts to the end credits. No! Sarah’s just glamoured to kill you — it’s not real!

“Halfway to a Threeway” feels more character-driven than story-driven, much like the episodes of Reginald the Vampire we’ve seen thus far. I think that’s part of why I love this show — it takes care of its characters, never shoving them aside in favor of plot stuffing or flashy sequences. Even supporting characters like the wonderful Nikki get some development. Despite the reprehensible displays of fatphobia from certain characters (ahem, Angela and Mike), this show still boasts a lot of heart. A whole lotta love and tenderness. Thankfully, it never seems like the series supports the fatphobia in any way.

Do you think we’ll meet the enigmatic Logan sooner rather than later? Will Reggie discover that Angela’s behind Sarah’s behavior? Will Nikki finally realize Ashley is the one for her? Bring on the blood-soaked fun. 🩸
