Reginald the Vampire Gets Stake Through the Heart

The Slushy Shack crew has seen its last sunrise. TVLine reports that SYFY has canceled the horror comedy Reginald the Vampire after two seasons. The news comes hot on the heels of the show’s Season 2 finale.

Here’s a synopsis of the series per NBCUniversal:

“Reginald Andres finally got his life together – when he was turned into a vampire. While he doesn’t fit into the stereotypical expectations of what a vampire looks like – he’s not chiseled or classically handsome – Reginald has found his place amongst an unlikely cohort that includes the cool vampire who sired him, the former vampire chieftain turned unexpected ally (or is she?), and his co-worker/former girlfriend. A show with a lot of heart and just enough blood, Reginald the Vampire proves the undead life is just as complicated as life itself.”

Cast and Crew

Reginald the Vampire is produced by Great Pacific Media Inc., Modern Story Company, December Films and Cineflix Studios and executive produced by Harley Peyton, Jeremiah Chechik, Todd Berger, Lindsay Macadam, Brett Burlock and Peter Emerson. The series is based on Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire book series.

The series stars Jacob Batalon as the titular vampire, Mandela Van Peebles as Maurice, Em Haine as Sarah, Savannah Basley as Angela, Thailey Roberge as Claire, Christin Park as Nikki, Aren Buchholz as Todd and Marguerite Hanna as Ashley. Max Montesi joined Season 2 as Uriel, with Garfield Wilson recurring as Balestro, Season 2’s Big Bad.

Season 2

Season 2 saw our heroes battling angels as Balestro threatened to eradicate the vampire race in 30 days. Reggie utilized the opportunity to prove the undead could find redemption. Meanwhile, Uriel, an angel who became smitten with Sarah, strove to adapt to human ways on Earth. The season ended on July 10 with quite a cliffhanger. After Reggie traveled to Heaven to save Sarah, the pair underwent a transformation: Sarah became a vampire, while Reggie’s humanity was restored.

SYFY has had a slate shakeup recently, with Resident Alien moving to USA for its fourth season. Meanwhile, the fate of Chucky hangs in the balance after airing its third season this past spring. As for the channel’s concrete programming, The Ark Season 2 will debut on July 17, while Season 3 of SurrealEstate (also starring Basley) will begin filming this fall. Revival, a new series, will join the SYFY roster in 2025.

While it suffered sophomore pains, Reginald the Vampire has a ton of heart and is a delightful horror comedy with a wonderful message. I got a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes from it, too.
