Reed Morano may be our first female director in the Star Wars universe. It’s news we’ve been waiting to hear! When sitting down with THR, we learned she had a meeting with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Is this the beginning of a female gaze in the galaxy far, far away?

When speaking with THR, Morano told the story of how she first got a meeting with Kennedy. Apparently Kennedy was watching The Handmaid’s Tale with her daughter and she wanted to know who Morano was. Morano, jokingly, believed that Kennedy thought she was a man due to her name. But according to her, the two and a half hour meeting went really well.

She’s amazing. We’re talking about adventure movies, and I’m not even remembering that she produced Goonies. Any movie that I put my finger on that I loved when I was growing up was a movie that she produced. Anyway, it was a great meeting. Obviously, I can’t say anything about what else we were talking about.

Before we get too excited, we know Morano for her television prowess so it may not be a film she directs. But! We do know there’s a Star Wars television series coming to production, so they may be eyeing her to direct some episodes in that. There’s also currently no information regarding the next television series coming – whether she’d be a part of the live-action series or another animation series coming after Star Wars Rebels finishes, we don’t know.

So there’s hope yet! And we know that Kennedy has made it her goal is to add more female directors into the mix. So I’m excited to see if this results in anything. Genuinely hoping that this is the beginning of more diversity in the director’s chairs. And not just in spin-offs and television shows either! When the current saga ends and another begins, there should be more voices.

Let us know what you think! Do you want to see Reed Morano direct a Star Wars feature? Who do you wanna see behind the director’s chair? Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news!
