The Red Sparrow trailer has landed and quite a few of us raised an eyebrow. The new Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton film shows us a spy thriller filled with double agents, espionage and sex. Based off the book of the same name by Jason Matthews, some of us think this story sounds a bit familiar. From start to finish this echoes a particular Marvel heroine’s background so much so that some fans are calling it a film about her.

The trailer shows Lawrence giving a Russian accent a try as she gets sucked into the world of Sparrows. They’re “weapons”, trained in the art of seduction in order to obtain enemy secrets. Dominika Egorova (Lawrence) has such a will to survive and such a knack for the role that she’s the best the school has ever seen. However, when she’s to follow an American mole in Russia, Nathaniel Nash (Edgerton), things get more complicated. Does she help her new beau or expose the mole?

Marvel fans see Black Widow‘s story in all of this. She was a part of the Red Room Academy, becoming a female sleeper agent for Russian Intelligence. She studied as a ballerina as a cover for her highly trained occupation of assassination. Does this story line up to Widows? Not exactly but it is incredibly close. We’ve no idea if Matthews was influenced by the character but it’s creepily coincidental if not. But some fans are saying this is the Black Widow movie they’ll never get. And it looks to be a great one at that – so we’ll take it!

What do you think of the trailer? Do you see this as a Black Widow-esque story or just a cool spy film? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Red Sparrow news!

Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

Red Sparrow flies into theaters March 2.
