Wow.
Just. Wow.
So, this week’s Season Two Premiere for Fox’s hit series, Gotham, was proof enough that the young series learned from the mistakes of the its first season and is eager to get off on a bigger, better, scarier, more epic foot this time around. We’ve got Detective Gordon dabbling with darker forces, we’ve got the murder of a prominent Batman villain in Sionis, Nygma loosing his mind, Penguin maniacally wielding his newfound power and, finally, we’ve got a big jail break. That’s where episode two picks up.
And it’s not good as we’ve got six crazies out there — all of them homicidal, power hungry maniacs with a rapist and a cannibal thrown in for good measure. And it looks like they’re about to go on a killing spree.
Though we have six that have escaped, all of them named, only three of them are recognizable to the Batman mythos: Barbara Kean, Sionis, and Helzinger.
Sionis goes on to become Black Mask and Barbara, at least in the comics, was Commissioner Gordon’s wife, but who is Aaron Helzinger?
Helzinger, a.k.a. Amygdala, was a homicidal maniac held in Arkham who, in an effort to help cure his fits of rage, ended up having his Amygdala surgically removed. However, the doctors were surprised to discover that the operation had the opposite effect, making him even angrier than he had been. After escaping the Asylum with Bane, he went on to be a right hand goon to The Ventriloquist.
All that to say, it looks like the next few weeks of Gotham could be… insane.
