Season 2 Episode 1 Recap
“Grumpy Old Liv”
What Happened
The return of everyone’s favorite combination of That’s So Raven, The Walking Dead, and Ve-ronica Mars was a bit slow. We ended last season with Liv Moore (Rose McIver), zombie detective, refusing to give her brother, Evan (Nick Purcha) a life-saving blood transfusion because it would have turned him into a zombie.
“Grumpy Old Liv” starts three months later. Liv is estranged from her family (her brother is alive, though) and still in the morgue with Ravi (Rahul Kohli). She’s still eating brains, solving crime, and finding a cure.
The case of the episode is a boring one that really just serves as a backdrop for more infor-mation that contributes to the larger arc of the show. The brain Liv eats is that of a murdered old man who was hated by everyone he knew. The brain does give Liv some great old man mo-ments of yelling at kids, being racist, and falling asleep in front of the TV in the middle of the day, but overall is not what the episode will be remembered for.
Blaine (David Anders) is still human after taking the cure and has allegedly gone legit (ha). Max Rager is trying to clean up Seattle’s zombie problem before moving forward with the launch of their next big product. The cure apparently gives the cured Zombie radar – they can feel when Zombies are nearby. Major, who has had the cure, is approached by Max Rager to be their zombie-killing messiah. He refuses until they threaten Liv’s life. Of course, he still loves her, so he takes the job. Peyton (Aly Michalka) is still absent from Liv’s life and she has to get a new roommate named Gilda (Leanne Lapp) who we find out at the end of the episode is one of the head evil folks over at Max Rager.
Blaine, forever a criminal and a hustler, is trying to reinvent the botched batch of utopium, so he can create an army of zombies who will turn to him for food. Because that’s going to work out so well.
What Does This Mean
Liv’s new roommate situation is TERRIFYING because Gilda knows she’s a zombie and has plans to eventually kill her. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. I am excited for the Tar-antino-esque girl fight that’s going to go down, but I’m also scared for Liv. Major’s double life can only last for so long and I’m wondering who is going to find out first – Liv or Ravi. Either way, it’s not going to be good. There’s so much tension already this season that I’m just waiting for someone (literally anyone) to have a win. I want Peyton back. She was great. She has to come back. She’s the win. I’m holding out for the return of Peyton.
An exciting thing about this season is the cure! We have two living, breathing, cured zombies walking around Seattle and I can’t wait to see what other side effects the cure has. Will Blaine’s hair ever turn brown again? Only time can tell!
Notable Exchange of the Episode
Blaine: Chocolate?
Liv: No, thanks.
Blaine: I forgot. Your taste buds are as kaputsky as the rest of you.
**Blaine eats chocolate and moans repeatedly**
Liv: Are you eating that or impregnating it?
