This week, we’re checking out The Peddler, a real-life bistro in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada, that featured on Prime Video’s Reacher Season 3 Episode 3, “Number 2 With a Bullet” providing the backdrop as part of the fictional town of Abbottsville, Maine. In the scene, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) and Richard Beck (Johnny Berchtold) have questionably flavored ice cream and a serious conversation about the state of Richard’s life.

The Peddler on Reacher

The Peddler opened in 2007 as “the beating heart of downtown Millbrook.” It offers pastries, coffee, wines, and dinner. Millbrook is a small community in the Township of Cavan Monaghan with a population of 1600. The community, established in 1816 with the construction of its first sawmill, is known for its well-preserved heritage homes and properties.

You won’t find lavender-infused ice cream cones on the IRL menu at The Peddler. Shucks. However, they do offer tasty-looking breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus alongside an elegant drinks selection. If ice cream is your must-have, there are ways to scratch your itch. They stock vanilla bean ice cream for their Affogato, a drink made by pouring espresso over the ice cream and finished with cinnamon and Demerara sugar. Also, the dinner menu includes a Valrhona Chocolate Fondant dessert which is served with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream and cacao nib crumble. Personally, the Tropical Pavlova caught my eye among the sweet treats available.

Fun Fact: if you recreate Reacher and Richard’s scene by sitting on the bench outside The Peddler, you’ll see 30 King St. E just across the road. That storefront was used as Time Warp Toys where Richard bought the toy gun for his father’s birthday gift. The fight with Richard’s bullies happens in front of the Home Hardware just to your left from The Peddler. That block of Downtown Millbrook saw a lot of action during filming.

What To Do After Visiting The Peddler

Millbrook, Ontario, isn’t exactly on the beaten path. It’s an hour’s drive from Ontario’s largest city Toronto. There are no public transit or train options available. This probably helps preserve its vintage heritage look and feel. The Township of Cavan Monaghan tourism website boasts three golf courses, a harness racing track, and several scenic walking trails as local attractions. The nearby Ganaraska Forest is cited as an “extremely popular destination for horseback riding enthusiasts with over 11,000 acres of forest to explore.”

Millbrook might feel familiar for non-Reacher reasons as it has been a filming location for several other shows. This includes The Music Man, Ice Princess, Let It Snow, Feel The Beat, and The Town Christmas Forgot. The 2005 film A History of Violence even appropriated the town’s name, turning it into Millbrook, Indiana. Director David Cronenberg was determined to use the town’s post office building. Because the town’s name features prominently on the façade, he changed the name of the town to match.

For a change of pace, about a 15-minute drive away is the town of Peterborough and the Peterborough Speedway. The Speedway is a 1/3 mile motor racing oval and has been operating since 1967.

Reacher streams on Prime Video. New episodes drop on Thursdays until March 27.
