Netflix announced today that they have a new series in the works with writer Gina Atwater. She is best known for her work on Westworld and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Atwater has signed a multi-year deal that will include creating, producing, directing and writing new series and other projects for the streaming platform. Her first project will be writing a TV adaptation of Jordan Ifueko‘s Raybearer!
Raybearer follows Tarisai. She has always longed for the warmth of a family after being raised in isolation by a mysterious and often absent mother known only as The Lady. She is sent to the capital to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of 11. Those who are chosen are linked together through the Ray – a bond deeper than blood.

The idea of this closeness is irresistible to Tarisai. After being alone for so long, she sees this as a gift. Except The Lady has other plans. Uses magic, she creates a wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey. That wish? Kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust. Tarisai won’t be someone’s pawn, but is she really strong enough to choose a different path for herself?
Raybearer is a fantasy novel with a complex world and characters that pulls at your heartstrings while drawing you in closer with each page. I highly suggest reading the book before the series comes out. I’m also excited knowing that Atwater is going to be working on this adaption. Her previous work speaks volumes on how well she is able to bring complex characters to life on the screen. We will definitely be keeping up with how this progresses!
I’m also interested in knowing if Atwater will be working on adapting more fantasy novels into Netflix series. They didn’t share any of her other projects past Raybearer, so it’s all up to speculation. However, after how well Shadow and Bone did, I think YA fantasy might just be the path Netflix needs to go down with this one. Are you excited about Atwater’s adaptation of Raybearer?
