Finding the last dragon never looked so badass. Disney dropped the official trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon, a breathtaking epic flick inspired by Southeast Asia.
Now, Raya and the Last Dragon is also making history with its lead — Kelly Marie Tran, who voices our titular heroine, is the first Southeast Asian actress to lead the charge in a Disney film. The story focuses on Raya (Tran) as she embarks on a journey to locate the last dragon. Accompanied by her sidekick Tuk Tuk, Raya leaves her home world of Kumandra which is threatened by evil forces. The formidable Druun must be stopped by any means necessary. Awkwafina lends her voices to Sisu, a dragon in human form who needs Raya’s help to revert to her true self.
Carlos López Estrada serves as director. Playwright Qui Nguyen and Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim penned the script. Paul Briggs and John Ripa are co-directors while Moana alum Osnat Shurer produces.
The trailer reveals our heroine embarking on her sojourn to find the last dragon. She provides narration throughout, revealing the evil at hand and delving into the fractured relationship between the people of Kumandra. The visuals are a feast for the eyes. I’m all for more representation in Disney films and this is an historic movie that uplifts Southeast Asian culture. Bring it on!
