Critically acclaimed performer and A-list film star Rachel Weisz will soon be making her way to the small screen. Weisz is attached to star in a TV series reboot of Dead Ringers for Amazon, Deadline reports. Dead Ringers is a cult classic ’80s film from storied director David Cronenberg. This reboot will be a gender-swap from its original counterpart. Weisz will portray the Mantle twins, a pair of OB/GYNs whose objective is to change the way women give birth. Scribe Alice Birch, who wrote for Hulu’s highly praised Normal People, will pen the script.

Now, Jeremy Irons initially played the twin doctors in Cronenberg’s flick. It’s said that the Dead Ringer TV reboot will delve into multiple themes including sexuality, pioneering medical research, and women’s health issues. The Mantle twins share everything from drugs to lovers to radical views and pushing boundaries regarding women’s healthcare.

We also learned from Deadline that Dead Ringers is the brainchild of Weisz herself, who’s an avid fan of the original film. Then, she partnered with Annapurna TV, wherein Birch was brought into the fold. This project remained in development purgatory for two years until it was recently pitched to streamers via Zoom.

Weisz was last seen on screen in the award-garnering The Favourite. Her next project is Marvel’s Black Widow opposite Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately, a release date is hanging in the balance due to COVID-19.

My humble opinion? Weisz is an incredible performer, for starters. Secondly, while I’ve yet to watch Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers, I’m tickled pink after reading the premise for Weisz’s TV reboot. It’s immensely intriguing and it’ll surely give Weisz meaty scenes aplenty in which the actress can sink her teeth.
