On Thursday, June 15, 2023, the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 premiere will arrive for streaming on Paramount+. With less than one month until the flagship returns, Trekkies are ready to have their questions from Strange New Worlds season 1 hopefully answered at last. Here are 8 questions we need to be answered by Strange New Worlds season 2!

Number One?

First and foremost, we want to know what happens with Number One, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn). In the Strange New Worlds season 1 episode “Ghosts of Illyria,” viewers learned that Una is an augment. This means she is not allowed to join Starfleet. Unfortunately, her longstanding deceit only compounds the violation.

The season 1 finale, “A Quality of Mercy,” concludes with Una being arrested. This action will likely culminate in her being sentenced and sent to a Federation penal colony. However, we can’t have one of the main Enterprise trio spending the season in a penal colony. When and how will Una be rescued?

The path of La’An?

Over the course of Strange New Worlds season 1, plenty of backstory about La’An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) was revealed. In the episode “Memento Mori,” we learned how her family was killed by the Gorn.

In the penultimate episode of season 1, “Not All Who Wander,” La’An and the crew again faced the Gorn. However, at the conclusion of the episode, La’An requests a leave of absence from Starfleet in order to help a young Gorn survivor, Oriana (Emma Ho), locate her family. We know from the Strange New Worlds season 2 teaser trailer that La’An will indeed return to the Enterprise. But when and how?

Sybok?

At the conclusion of “The Serene Squall,” it was revealed that the half-brother of Spock (Ethan Peck), the infamous Sybok, was incarcerated at the Ankeshtan K’Til Vulcan Criminal Rehabilitation Center, where Spock’s betrothed T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) is stationed. Furthermore, we discovered that the pirate Captain Angel (Jesse James Keitel) has a relationship with Sybok.

It seems unlikely that Sybok was teased, but will not be further explored. For one thing, it has been established through dialogue that Angel is prone to stranding people on remote planets, and when we are re-introduced to Sybok in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, he is stranded on Nimbus III. But will Sybok play into Strange New Worlds season 2?

Bruce?

In Strange New Worlds season 1, the Enterprise‘s Chief of Engineering was Hemmer (Bruce Horak). The Aenar was an instant fan favorite. This meant that viewers were especially disappointed when Hemmer was killed by the Gorn in “Not All Who Wander.”

However, while Hemmer may have died, there’s a strong possibility that Horak could return. For one thing, the actor is an outspoken fan of acting while wearing masks. And for another, many Trek actors have played multiple roles in the same series. Could we see Horak return in a different role in Strange New Worlds season 2?

Lower Decks?

We’ve known since San Diego Comic Con in July 2022 that Strange New Worlds would feature a crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks. The episode, which will be directed by Jonathan Frakes, will feature a guest appearance by Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid).

But just how will this crossover occur? No concrete details have been revealed yet. Could Beta Shift be running a hologram program featuring Pike and company, à la the Star Trek: Enterprise series finale? Is legitimate time travel involved?

Pelia?

While we have questions about whether or not Horak will be returning in Strange New Worlds season 2, we know he won’t be the Chief Engineer. This is thanks to the fact that the identity of the Enterprise‘s new Chief of Engineering has already been revealed: Lieutenant Pelia (Carol Kane).

While we know Pelia will be the Chief Engineer, however, we don’t know anything about the character. What’s her deal? Why does she wear a second badge? And like Hemmer before her, will her tenure as Chief Engineer conclude by the end of the season?

Moretegas?

One of the most popular characters among Trekkies from Strange New Worlds season 1 was Enterprise pilot Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). However, with only 10 episodes and lots of strange new worlds to explore, many fans felt that we needed “Moretegas.”

Fortunately, it has already been implicitly confirmed that we will learn more about Ortegas in Strange New Worlds season 2. However, this begs plenty of questions regarding what might be revealed about the character. Will we get to see the scars she got from a Vulcan lirpa (mentioned in “Spock Amok“)? Let’s hope so.

Runa Revealed?

In the Strange New Worlds season 1 episode “The Elysian Kingdom,” an entity transformed the crew of the Enterprise into storybook characters. This meant that La’An appeared alongside Princess Runa, played by Chong’s real-life pet dog, Runa.

However, questions remain regarding the Runa of the Enterprise. Was she created wholesale by the entity? Or, like the other Enterprise crewmembers, was a pet dog already present on board the ship before the encounter? And if so, does this imply that we’ll see the non-transformed Runa in Strange New Worlds season 2?
