Some families and cultures have the tradition of gifting and reading books on Christmas Eve. If reading isn’t part of your holiday to-do list, perhaps this list of queer romances to read if you love Hallmark holiday movies will get you in the spirit. With two novellas below, you even have the option to ease into the custom!

10 Things That Never Happened

Alexis Hall‘s 10 Things That Never Happened is a spin on the classic amnesia romance. Filled with humor, pathos and growth, Christmas is the backdrop, not the main story in this tale. That said, this is a wonderful tale to read this time of year if you want to get cozy and warm with a grumpy-kinda-sunshine pair. Plus, who doesn’t like a little bit of fake amnesia thrown in with an office romance?

Honeymoon for One

What would you do if you realized you forgot to cancel your honeymoon months after you canceled your wedding? It’s Christmas time, and you cannot get a refund. Do you go on the trip alone? That’s what Rachel Bowdler’s Honeymoon for One explores. Of course, protagonist Robin’s dreaded ski holiday to Calgary becomes a chance at new love.

Baking Spirits Bright

Writing about this novella made me realize there are three books on this list of four about people in the food industry. What is it about Christmas, queers and food? Hmm… Anyhoo, in Baking Spirits Bright by Bryce Oakley, Beth finds herself on a baking competition program and is very attracted to one of the judges. As things heat up in the kitchen, they get steamy in the bedroom. But is that kosher?

Christmas Spirit: An Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity, Age Gap, Only One Bed MM Christmas

The title of Ali Ryecart’s novella is objectively terrible. I also can’t say Christmas Spirit is a masterpiece; what it is, however, is an off-the-wall Christmas story where Santa is friggin’ real. It is a story where Santa is real and plays wingman to two gay chefs. Jolly Ole Saint Nick himself “forces the proximity” and “only-one-bed” tropes laid out in the title.
