Welcome to this week’s installment of F2P Friday, where we highlight our favorite Free-2-Play games. The video game market is oversaturated, and sometimes, hidden gems fall through the cracks. This is where we do the digging for you and feature a new F2P game every week that we know you will enjoy. Let’s dive in.

Purrgatory

Are you looking for a game with more cat puns than you can shake a treat bag at? Need something with LGBTQ+ representation? Oh boy, do I have the game for you. Purrgatory is your purrfect match, with more gay animals and cat cameos than you can handle.

The Basics

Purrgatory is truly a hidden gem within the vast library of the Steam store. It is a visual novel about passing time in an afterlife. The art has hand-drawn backgrounds, giving it a charming, down-to-earth vibe. Parts of it remind me of Florence with the emotional storytelling aspects and simple yet relatable art design.

Like Florence and other visual novels, there isn’t much gameplay. Visual novels are more about the story than gameplay design, so there isn’t skill-based content. That makes this a relaxing and enjoyable experience for a game about death. Purrgatory plays as you expect it to — a simple point-and-click adventure.

While the gameplay might not make your tail twitch, the plot is where Purrgatory comes to life. The overall story vibe and character writing remind me of another indie gem, Grimm’s Hollow. Both games are set in the afterlife and lull you into a false sense of security before beating you over the head with your feelings (in a good way).

A word of warning, this game does have a maze effect when you first start. It might take a while to get your bearings as you wander in purgatory. Don’t be afraid to look up directions if you need help; there’s no shame.

Why Should You Play?

Why should you play Purrgatory? I would suggest this game to anyone looking for a sweet, thoughtful gaming experience. This game was a passion project from the creator Niv (Darvin Heo), and it shows in every corner of it. While the runtime is brief (only three or so hours), you’ll find it is time well spent.

There are also multiple endings for this game, so if you didn’t get enough time in Purrgatory, worry not; the fun here is furrever! All jokes aside, try to get through as many endings as possible. They are all unique and show you new sides of the characters. I needed more time in this world, as I got too attached to its inhabitants.

Heads up, you’ll want to leave the sound on while playing. The soundtrack is so beautifully curated that I had to look up “Purrgatory Blues” to listen to while writing this. It has an indie-folk band sound with a raw feel that perfectly complements the game. It gives the same vibes as the Wristcutters: A Love Story movie’s soundtrack.

Have a F2P game you’d like us to check out? Have you played this one before? We love to hear from you gamers in the comments. Ready to leap into Purrgatory for yourself? You can download it for free from Steam.
