Peaches, we have good news and bad news. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Prime Video’s critically lauded and audience-beloved series A League of Their Own will return for Season 2. However, it’ll be its last. Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson‘s delightfully queer, emotionally resonant series will debut a truncated second season on the streamer following months of negotiations with Sony Pictures Television. Season 2 will only consist of four episodes instead of Season 1’s eight-episode arc. It’ll now be billed as a limited series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the announcement follows “renegotiations with Sony to lower the show’s licensing fee” and the cast having to sign new deals because of the shortened episode count compared to Season 1.

This iteration of A League of Their Own is a different spin on Penny Marshall’s 1992 film starring Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, Lori Petty and Tom Hanks. O’Donnell made a cameo in Season 1 of the show, which premiered on Prime Video on August 12, 2022. The series first hit the development stages in 2018.

Season 1 opens with Idaho native Carson Shaw (Jacobson) during World War II as she makes the trek to Illinois to try out for the Rockford Peaches, an all-women baseball team. Carson becomes their catcher. The other lead, Max Chapman (Chanté Adams), finds a way to play baseball after the Rockford Peaches’ coach rejects her due to racism. Max, an incredibly talented pitcher, winds up on the All-Stars baseball team, going on tour by Season 1’s end.

The series also stars D’Arcy Carden as Greta Gill, Gbemisola Ikumelo as Clance Morgan, Roberta Colindrez as Lupe García, Kelly McCormack as Jess McCready, Priscilla Delgado as Esti González, Molly Ephraim as Maybelle Fox, Melanie Field as Jo De Luca, Kate Berlant as Shirley Cohen and Dale Dickey as Beverly.

While I’m elated we’re getting another season of this wonderfully inclusive and hilariously touching series, I’m disappointed it’s only four episodes. A League of Their Own deserves better. It’s well-received across the board, showcases stories of marginalized communities we’ve never seen onscreen and has nothing but love interwoven in its DNA. The LGBTQIA+ community and BIPOC folks deserve representation. The fans, who fought tooth and nail to garner a Season 2 renewal, deserve better.

That said, I don’t doubt that Graham and the team will deliver a final chapter that audiences will love. I’m excited to see what lies in store for us.
