Have you ever wondered what Minerva McGonagall’s wand is made of? How about wanting to know more about Dementors? And what exactly Delores Jane Umbridge’s problem was?
JK Rowling has hinted for years that she has enough backstory and research to write a Harry Potter encyclopedia. Her website, Pottermore, has just released three e-books of short stories. Each book is only about 70 pages and covers a few subjects. The stories themselves read more like dossiers than fiction. The best part is the personal note from JK Rowling after each entry.
Of Heroes, Hardships, and Dangerous Hobbies features Hogwarts professors. Each biography gives such stats as birthday, parentage, and the contents of their wands. Of course, McGonagall is included. You also get insight on Lupin and Trelawney. Some of the information was covered or at least hinted at in the Harry Potter books. McGonagall and Lupin are fan favorites and the fans will be pleased.
Of Power, Politics, and Pesky Poltergeists is a collage of subjects. Every Minister of Magic is listed, along with the history of the office itself. Also included are a history of the prison Azkaban and insights on potions and cauldrons. One of Harry’s greatest foes, Delores Umbridge makes an appearance in this one. The real-life insight of this hated character will answer many fan questions.
Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable History elaborates on a few backstories that are covered in the original books. The Marauders’ Map, Sorting Hat, and Chamber of Secrets don’t get too much new information. The Hufflepuff Common Room, Hogwarts Express and Kings Cross Station get a lot of attention. The chapter on castle residents includes ghosts, the portraits, and The Ballad of Nearly Headless Nick.
All in all, there is no vital information in these books. They are entertaining tidbits that add a few new layers to an already rich story. If Rowling chooses to continue these, I’d like to see one on the other schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
