Pose Like A Superhero!

Did you know that posing like a superhero has mental and physical benefits?

John Marcotte, feminist, father and founder of Heroic Girls recently gave a TEDx Talk about how girls can be superheroes too.

In his speech, he challenged women and girls to pose like a superhero for two minutes. Marcotte says a Harvard study showed posing in a strong, open stance with fists on hips, proved measurable differences. Testosterone rose by 8% and cortisol dropped by 25%! Ya know, Cortisol is that stuff that gives you that stress belly we all love to hate.

Inspired by his two young daughters who are true geek girls, he founded Heroic Girls.

Girls need heroes

Heroic Girls is an organization dedicated to empowering girls by advocating for strong role models in alternative media — particularly comics. We want to get more girls and women involved in the creation and consumption of comic books as a tool to increase assertiveness and self-esteem, and to help them to dream big.~HeroicGirls.com

Because of John, womenyoushouldknow.net has officially adopted the classic superhero pose and they want everyone to join in by posing, taking a picture and sending it to their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages with the hashtag #poselikeasuperhero

When you take you pictures post them to the Geek Girl Authority social media pages as well. We are all about empowering women and girls, so let’s stand strong ladies!

EDITOR’S NOTE: There’s also a lovely part of John’s speech where he explains his theory on why it’s important for boys and girls alike to understand each others’ favorite movies, characters, songs etc. He uses Frozen as an example. Basically, the more we know about each other – across gender lines – the more we understand each other. The more we empathize. That goes for everyone. Not just girls. It’s truly a beautiful message. Thank you, John Marcotte. Thank you for singing Let it Go out the car window. ~Audrey
