Relax, this podcast won’t actually kill you. It just talks about a bunch of other stuff that can! This Podcast Will Kill You is hosted by professional smart people Erin Welsh and Erin Allmann Updyke (a.k.a. The Erin’s). They are ecologists and epidemiologists that somehow make discussions of infectious diseases acceptable dinner party conversation. They even add a classy touch by providing the perfect cocktail recipe to match each topic. Every episode tackles a different disease, from its history, to its biology, and finally, to how afraid you should be; which is very. Be very, very afraid. You’ll also get a grossly (heh, get it?) entertaining way to remind you to wash those hands, you filthy animal!

Now, I’ve listened to many podcasts of all shapes and genres because who doesn’t like variety? But my podcast feed includes a long list of horror fiction and seriously detailed true crime shows. Yet none of them have come close to genuinely freaking me out the way This Podcast Will Kill You has. Think of it as the My Favorite Murder for deadly illnesses. Or as the science lesson you didn’t know you needed until it was presented to you in the most interestingly disgusting way possible. Plus there’s booze involved! That’s always fun.
Seeing as our lovely hosts are grad students it’s no surprise that the information they bring to the table is as enlightening as it is fun. It is also accurate and, in some cases, shows viewers how some deadly diseases have been inspirations for very familiar subject matter in pop culture. It’s about as educational as it gets although concepts are wonderfully simplified for those average, everyday, non medical school people to understand better. The drinks are a nice touch that make you feel like you’re overhearing a very bizarre conversation at the bar except, you know, in the comfort of your own home. Preferably in pajamas. The Erin’s are even nice enough to include the drink recipes on the official This Podcast Will Kill You Instagram page.
