Podcast Review: SPINES

Carolyn Ducker

Updated on:

Spines, is a FateCrafter’s Network podcast about trauma, a mystery, and a cult. Grove, Mosaic, Trumpet. These are the words that bring to mind the cultic ritual that took Wren and nine of her friends to the attic. Their time in the attic would irrevocably change their lives.

Plot Of Spines

Wren woke up in an attic two months ago. Now, she is looking for everyone who was in the attic with her. Partially to compare notes, partially to remind herself she is not crazy, and partially for companionship. The Skull Man scares Wren the most. She’s pretty sure she’s responsible for his death yet she keeps seeing him.

Her search for her attic companions takes her to some odd places. From the middle of a sandstorm, to the bottom of a cavern (sinkhole?) she finds the nine people who knew what she went through, and who have been acting strangely ever since.

About Spines

Spines is in its second season of production. It has sixteen episodes. Spines requires a lot of attention, rewinding, and relistening. Missing a moment of this podcast can lead to confusion, because Wren is often confused about who she is and what exactly she is doing. The question becomes is Wren an unreliable narrator? Is she this way on purpose? Is it an accident?

Fans of Welcome to Night Vale, The Black Tapes, and Alice Isn’t Dead will enjoy this podcast. This podcast is a little weird, but nothing is so overstated that the story becomes unlikely. Spines is told partially through flashback. However, the flashbacks are always noted and narrated cleanly.

There are some heavy themes in the podcast, so be aware before you listen. The trauma experienced by the characters is skillfully played, and victims of real trauma may see themselves in these characters, as different as their coping mechanisms may be.

Spines is written by Jamie Killen and narrated by Wren Jones. It is produced by ZoomDoom Stories. Spines is a part of the FateCrafters Podcast Network. You can listen to episodes of the Spines podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud, and at SpinesPodcast.com .
