“We need emergency services in Limetown. The ambulance, and the fire, police… Just send the whole [beep] army!” Limetown was the smash hit of 2014 podcasting, and it’s getting a second season. What did you miss? Why should you listen?
Plot of Limetown
A small town of researchers in Tennessee (akin to the Manhattan Project, only not quite as secretive) call emergency services on the night of February 8, 2004. Emergency services were barred entry from the town when they arrived. By the time the gates were opened on February 11, all 327 inhabitants had vanished. The job: exploring the human brain. The downfall? Investigative journalist Lia Haddock explores the tragedy at Limetown ten years after it occurred.
Review of Limetown
Limetown remains one of the most well done shows in the podcast verse. A smash hit it comes highly recommended to anyone just starting out with podcasts (as it’s a pretty quick listen), or anyone who has been around for awhile. The story is fast paced, but can be a little info dumpy in sections, although listeners hardly notice because they are so intrigued.
This show is one of the most brilliantly done multi-classed audio dramas. It combines elements of mystery, conspiracy, horror, and drama perfectly. This is the most satisfying miniseries I’ve ever encountered. As an audio drama, it continues to gain fans online, although it ended three years ago.
The interviews are the most compelling. Limetown feels real. I felt myself researching the actual place. It spawned my obsession with Los Alamos, a similar, real life town in New Mexico, where those working on the Manhattan Project lived.
Until Lia Haddock’s interviews, no survivors from Limetown had ever been found. That she found so many to tell her what happened makes sense though, given the secretive nature of the town. Unlike Los Alamos, the surrounding area knew of the town’s existence, and just weren’t allowed in. This somehow adds to the mystery surrounding the town, instead of dispelling it.
This was a podcast I listened to all in one sitting. Its just that good! The acting is compelling, the story is layered and thatched well together, and the cliffhanger will leave listeners begging for a return to Limetown!
What You Need to Know
There are seven episodes in this former miniseries. One minisode in the form of an apology comes between episodes 2 and 3. There are eleven entries in the podcast in total (including trailers). Episodes run anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. There are some very tense moments in the show, and in episode 4, a gunshot is heard very suddenly. If you find these sounds upsetting, transcripts are available online on Reddit.
If you enjoyed The Black Tapes, Serial, or Spines, you will definitely enjoy this podcast!
