Podcast Review: THE BRIDGE

Updated on:

The Bridge. It spans the Atlantic, connecting the Americas to Europe. It’s job? To replace airplanes as the primary form of travel over the vast ocean. Did it work? For a time, but it has fallen into disrepair. For anyone who loves a mystery, a dash of horror, and a briny deep sea beneath, this podcast is for you!

Plot of The Bridge

In the early 90’s, a transoceanic bridge crossed the Atlantic ocean. A series of ill-informed decisions and disastrous accidents and events mean the bridge is now rather derelict. Although it is still occasionally used, it’s not the center of activity that it once was. Etta is in charge of the Traffic Reports on Watchtower 10, at Checkpoint 10 on the bridge. Etta provides not only a traffic report, but histories, and points out various places where creepy events have occurred.

Review of The Bridge

The Bridge is an alternate timeline show, and it kind of exists in its own bubble, like Welcome to Night Vale. For some reason, I got a Stephen King’s The Shining kind of vibe from Watchtower 10, despite the Chocolate Fountain Incident.

The sound quality of The Bridge is what really makes this show special, as it leans heavily on distorted noises, effects, and radio static to tell bits of the story. The actors, even when they are in character pretending to be upset or scared (Etta does this a lot, for her own amusement), deliver believable and sometimes a little too realistic portrayals. I had to pause several times while listening just to get my bearings and remember that I wasn’t in any real danger.

Like The White Vault, actors for The Bridge are not local to each other. Instead they span the continental United States, which, is appropriate, I think, for a show about a transatlantic bridge. Credit must be given where it is due, to the sound design and mixing team, and composers Jake Hull and Sara Fairchild

What You Need To Know

The Bridge has completed its first season and is currently on hiatus. There are twelve full length episodes, and five mini-episodes. Episodes run about 30-45 minutes in length. Themes in The Bridge are dark. This podcast is suitable for those twelve and up (to my estimation, but parents can listen to the first few episodes and decide for themselves).

If you liked shows like Return Home, Wolf 359, Archive 81, Under Pressure,  or The White Vault, you’ll enjoy this show!

The Bridge was created by Alex Brown (Who also voices Etta!) and Rebecca Mahoney. It is also co-written by the duo. Alex Brown is the producer. You can listen to episodes of The Bridge on iTunes, Podbean, PlayerFM, or at TheBridgePod.Com/Episodes
