This is sad news to report. Peter Sallis, most notable for his role as Wallace in Wallace and Gromit, has passed away. The London actor lived a very long life at age 96.
Sallis reached wide audiences with his role as Wallace, a cheese loving inventor. His endearing voice would echo through living rooms of children around the world, bringing laughter with all the hijinks Wallace and Gromit would get into. In fact, I will randomly hear him saying “Cheese, Gromit!” in my head, his voice has stuck with me for that long. Wallace is even modeled after Sallis in appearance.
For those in the UK, however, may know him best from Last of the Summer Wine. He played Norman Clegg, a mild-mannered philosopher in which he was the longest running cast member in the series. 30 years in fact! He retired shortly after the series in 2010. He made appearances in other works such as an episode of Doctor Who and voiced Rat in The Wind and the Willows television series.
Our condolences to his friends and family in this hard time. RIP Peter Sallis.
