Peter Jackson is bringing Philip Reeve’s sci-fi/fantasy YA book series, Mortal Engines to the big screen. It has an official trailer, and it looks as epic as it needs to be.

Mortal Engines takes place in a post apocalyptic future where predatory cities have transformed into giant vehicles roaming the world and literally consuming smaller traction towns. The story follows two unlikely young heroes who come together to avenge a death and change everything.
Collider pointed out in their reporting that the visual effects are not fully fleshed out yet. But, regardless of that, the movie looks cool. The steampunk epic is a big undertaking. Who better than the Lord of the Rings team? And, yes… the team is back. The script was written by Jackson and his partners, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. The film is directed by Christian Rivers, who was mentored by Jackson on the LOTR trilogy, The Hobbit films and King Kong. This is Rivers first time at the helm.
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
Mortal Engines is set to roll into theaters on December 14th, 2018.
