Highlights
- Percy Jackson and the Olympians held their first SDCC panel in Hall H, celebrating the incredible success of their first season on Disney+.
- The panel answered several burning questions about Season 2. The season will follow the story in the second novel in Rick Riordan’s series, The Sea of Monsters.
- Daniel Diemer will portray Tyson in the upcoming season.
Ares in the House (As Well)
Hosted by Hades actor, Jay Duplass, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians panel was attended by executive producers Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg, and actors Walker Scobell (Percy), Aryan Simhadri (Grover), Leah Jeffries (Annabeth), and Virginia Kull (Sally Jackson).
The panel settled in by reminiscing about their favorite moments while filming Season 1. Duplass asked Scobell if he could take on Adam Copeland in real life. (Copeland plays the god of war, Ares, in the series. He might be better known to some as the AEW wrestler, Edge.) Scobell answered quickly to the negative. Just then, Copeland made a surprise appearance on stage.

Jeffries shared that Season 1 was a learning experience and fans can expect the cast to step up their acting game in the new season. Simhadri mentioned he spent a lot of time watching goat videos to prepare to play Grover. He also commented it took a while for him to stop walking like a goat after shooting wrapped. The audience was also treated to a blooper reel from Season 1.
Who Is Tyson?
Fans of the novels know that The Sea of Monsters introduces Percy’s half-brother, a young cyclops named Tyson. As described in the Disney+ press release, “[Tyson] grew up all alone on the streets and finds it difficult to survive in the human world. Shy and awkward, with a heart almost as big as he is, Tyson soon discovers that Poseidon is his father, which means Percy Jackson is his half-brother… and that Tyson may have finally found a home.”

Author Rick Riordan announced the biggest news of the panel via a recorded video. Daniel Diemer will portray Tyson in Season 2. Canadian Diemer recently starred in Hulu’s limited series Under the Bridge. Before that, he played the male lead in the Netflix feature The Half of It.
Also via a video message, Diemer expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he’d received from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians family and fans. He also mentioned how excited he is to be a part of a series based on books he’s loved since he was ten years old.
Part of the Family
Once the announcement had been made, Scobell, Simhadri, and Jeffries shared that they’d been bursting to talk about Diemer’s joining the cast. Simhadri described Diemer as approximately 6’5″ but Scobell insists Diemer’s only a couple inches taller than him. Jeffries disagreed. (Fact checking: Diemer is 6’4″ and Scobell is 5’9″ so yeah, that’s more than a “couple” of inches.)
