In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Patrick Stewart teased that a Star Trek movie script was being written with him in mind. While posted on January 4, 2024, the interview was recorded in November 2023 in support of the publication of Stewart’s memoir, Making It So.

Patrick Stewart Returns to Star Trek (Again)?

Stewart told host Josh Horowitz that he had just been informed a Trek script was being written with Stewart in mind. He continued that he expected to receive a draft of the script within a fortnight. Stewart noted that the project excited him due to its experimental nature.

In many interviews (and in Making It So), Stewart has made it clear that he was willing to participate in Star Trek: Picard only because it was a departure. This allowed him to bring something different to the role when compared to his performance on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Perhaps the news of a script in development should come as no surprise. In Making It So, Stewart wrote: “I am gently pushing Paramount to let us do one single Picard movie. Not a Next Generation movie, as we have already done four of those.” Stewart continues that this hypothetical movie would constitute an “expansion and deepening of the universe as we’ve seen it” on Picard.

So, what could we expect from this movie? Making It So continues: “I’ve discussed this with [Jonathan Frakes], [Brent Spiner], and [LeVar Burton], and they are all game. Jonathan is my first choice to direct it.” Could official confirmation of an in-development movie featuring the TNG alums be in the cards?

All three seasons of Star Trek: Picard are currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
