Maxine stands at a marble-topped counter, backlit with bright sunshine through sheer drapes. She wears a yellow suit with white trim and a matching white bow in her hair.

Just when Maxine (Kristen Wiig) thinks she’s freed herself and her lady friends from the secrets of the past, things get even more complicated in Palm Royale Season 1 Episode 6, “Maxine Takes a Step.” Planning the Beach Ball without the big stick of Norma’s (Carol Burnett) Rolodex to back her up proves challenging. At the same time, Douglas’s (Josh Lucas) big dream of becoming the King of Condos may be costing them the dream of financial stability.

Of course, things have changed significantly for Linda (Laura Dern) as well. Her decision to literally burn the past might come back to bite her when Virginia (Amber Chardae Robinson) and the women of bookstore circle learn of it.

Laura stands in the center of the women's circle dressed in a white blouse and denim split panel skirt. Other members of the circle sit behind her.

Buried History

The Shiny Sheet‘s editor, Ann Holiday (Mindy Cohn), is such a fun character and now that she’s caught a whiff of something unusual in Maxine’s history, we can expect her to dig to the truth of the matter. What is Maxine hiding and how long can she deflect Ann’s interest?

While we’re discussing Ann, how amazing is it that they cast Cohn, who portrayed The Facts of Life‘s own journalism star, Natalie Green, in the 1980s? Tenacious and knowledgable, with a nose for a story. Cohn’s got “friendly but fierce” nailed, and the nostalgic heart of me loves that she’s back on my screen.

While the fashion never lets us forget that Palm Royale is firmly rooted in the ideas and inspirations of the late 1960s, the news broadcasts have only served as general background shading so far. In “Maxine Takes a Step,” the historical launch of Apollo 12 figures prominently, setting up a major event at the club as well as a nuanced metaphor for the threshold of discovery many characters cross.

Mitzi staffs the bar cart dressed as a space person with a clear helmet and a silver suit.

Who will take a small step and who will leap? Can Robert (Ricky Martin) continue to walk the line between passive observer and active participant? Will Evelyn’s (Allison Janney) foundation crumble without Norma’s bedrock of evidence? Can Dinah (Leslie Bibb) sustain her sham marriage and nurture her love nest simultaneously?

As NASA prepares to send a shuttle to the moon, strap in, friends, as the Palm Beach elite put on a master class on blindly lighting fuses just to see the stars.

Palm Royale streams on Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
