Bad Dreams and Sweet Hallucinations

In their bedroom, Royal (Josh Brolin) recounts to Cecilia (Lili Taylor) a dream where Amy was there alone but the house wasn’t there. She kept saying fix it. They see Autumn (Imogen Poots) leave and ask where she’s going. She says “to church.” Cecilia says they have to get ready for court.

A brooding Rhett (Lewis Pullman) lies awake while Maria sleeps. He answers a call from his dad and says, “I’ll see you there.”

Two black SUVs with sirens and an ambulance pull up to the Tillersons. Luke (Shaun Sipos) watches as the rock song Cherry Pie plays and two incredibly sexy nurses assist Billy (Noah Reid). Oh, Luke still has a case of hallucinations. So, he rubs his eyes. It’s just two regular nurses in scrubs assisting Billy from an ambulance with their Dad, Wayne (Will Patton).

In the house, a nurse says she thinks Billy will be healed because after all, Wayne’s back on his feet after his stroke. Wayne reacts oddly. They leave. Luke is mad that the nurses aren’t staying. Wayne says Billy’s care falls to them. Doesn’t matter if they are rich, blood makes it their responsibility.

Luke asks Wayne to let him focus on the West Pasture. Wayne says to prove he can take care of Billy then they’ll discuss but for now, he has a date with the Abbotts. Luke asks what’s going on, and Wayne answers “Deuteronomy, son”.

Courts and Churches

In court, Royal, Cecilia and Rhett sit as a judge asks where Perry is. The lawyer says Perry is grief-stricken over Amy’s disappearance and is trying to find her. Cecelia says this is true. The judge says that witnesses saw Amy go willingly with Rebecca so Perry should be in court. Royal tries to say his son is a good man but Wayne, sitting in the courtroom, blurts that Perry killed his son and makes a ruckus. The Judge slams his gavel for order.

The judge says Perry is in violation of his bail. His failure to appear is a notice of forfeiture. He thinks Royal’s appeal to the court is a stall tactic. The Abbotts must repay 500K by Monday or the deed to the ranch is forfeit.

Autumn arrives at the church. Pastor Ken (Johnny Sneed) greets her. She apologizes for her behavior in church the other day. He asks her if she’s ever been a part of a congregation to which she replies, no but she was part of a cult.

When he asks her why she’s there she quotes Ephesians 4:11, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;” As a result, Pastor Ken is intrigued and invites her to join him on an outing with some women congregants.

Fitting In

Back in the 80s, Perry (Tom Pelphrey) gets a new driver’s license with his younger than him dad, young Royal (Young Royal). Perry comments, “Smiling wasn’t big in our household.” when they look at the license which uses his alias, Ben Younger.

Royal says he needs to start fitting in. They purchase Perry a new cattleman hat and some clothes. Perry shows the clerk a picture of Rebecca and they ask if she’s seen her. She replies no. Royal points out that the Octogenerian clerk is actually his grandniece and his last living relative.

Royal brings this up to show after he came through time, he decided not to live in the past and accepted what had happened. Perry disagrees.

At a senior resting home. A feisty resident, Sally,  is mad she can’t have a cigarette – the good lord’s already punched her ticket and he’s gonna give her her time back. Autumn and Pastor Ken intervene.

Autumn tells Sally she is “disrespecting time’. She says someone told her once that God and the universe give time to some of us and we’re the ones that have to figure out how to make it count. Sally knows she’s gonna get her cigarette but fights anyway. Why should she be given time when she’s the one who’s wasting it? Sally laughs. She likes Autumn.

Speaking the Truth

Royal looks through his address book but Ceci says they won’t be asking people for money. She wants to try the bank.

At the bank, they are told the problem is they don’t have collateral. As a result, Cecilia pontificates about loyalty and how her dad was friends with the banker’s dad. The Abbott word is good. But the banker says after what Perry did, their word isn’t the same.

When the others leave, Autumn approaches Billy. She says Royal took her and he thinks she’s his family. She tells Billy “We live inside each other.” Not creepy at all. He agrees and she kisses him.

As Autumn leaves, Luke stops her and says Billy got shot because of her. She says to meet her at The Handsome Gambler.

The van arrives back at the church. Pastor Ken says they are praying for Billy’s recovery. She responds, “Don’t you think praying is hiding”, it’s inaction. Ken says just because she got through to Sally doesn’t mean she’s enlightened.

A fearless Autumn asks why he thinks Jesus was nailed to the cross. His very pat answer is that he was the son of God. Autumn, who seems to be 10x’s the pastor this guy is says that it was because he spoke the truth. And the pastor is scared by how Autumn made Sally listen to the truth.

Ken says it’s dimestore therapy. Sally has a traumatic brain injury and if Autumn goes back tomorrow she will hear the exact same story and not remember Autumn.

In the 80s, Royal and Perry dress a horse. Perry doesn’t know why Rebecca left him and Amy. He never thought he’d kill someone from that pain or abandon Amy. He wants to make everything right. Royal says he’s lying to himself.

As Royal continues to talk, he doesn’t see Young Royal, what Perry sees is Royal as his older father – aka Josh Brolin. Royal says no one knows better than him. The only difference is that Royal was 8 years old and it was an accident. Perry knew what he was doing. Ouch. Perry has to get one dig in – “Too bad you’re a better father now than you are in my time.” Royal is unphased.

Goo Not Gone

When Luke and Autumn meet, he tells her the big hole closed up as well as the ones he dug. She says he’s small-minded because “closed” to him means gone. He comments that she’d get along with his Dad since they both think Billy is amazing. Autumn says Billy’s seen what’s to come.

Autumn asks Luke what he saw. He says he saw a powerful Autumn with followers but that Billy wasn’t there. She asks for some of the ‘goo’/mineral, she wants to take some to see it for herself. He lies and says he doesn’t have any and offers her a ride home.

Billy summons Luke with an air horn back at the Tillersons. No one comes. He reaches for his pills but drops them when he sees a miniature car on the nightstand. Billy falls out of bed right when Wayne returns. He whispers “car” to his dad and rubs his lips. Wayne grabs the miniature and opens it. There’s a baggie with the mineral inside that Wayne puts in his mouth. He then kisses Billy full on the mouth and they are both high.

Maria wants to offer advice on loans but Royal says not now. She apologizes but also says the salt of the earth thing won’t help them. She leaves. Rhett follows. Luke tells his dad that Trevor hated him and he hates him too.

A Royal Pain

In the present, Wayne sits at his dining room table wearing some kind of fur robe. Cecilia shows up. She asks for the $500K. But he wants to know why would he do something like that for Royal? She makes to leave when he asks what happened to her fight. She’s tired and trying to save her family. He says he’ll give her the money on one condition.

Later, Cecelia arrives back at the Abbot ranch on horseback. She excitedly says Wayne will give them the money as long as he gets the West Pasture and an apology for taking her from him but Royal gets mad gets in his truck and drives away.

Royal drives and gets a piercing head pain so he stops. The perspective is upside down as he drives again and stops in the West Pasture. He gets out of the car and walks toward the hole as a body climbs out. It’s Sherriff Joy.
