In the announcement we’ve all been waiting for, Our Flag Means Death is officially coming back for season 2! HBO Max announced the hit show’s renewal just in time to kick off Pride 2022. Here’s what we know so far.

The renewal comes after Our Flag Means Death spent nearly ten weeks at the top of streaming charts; its success was spurred largely by a massive online fan campaign. The pirate comedy debuted in March 2022. Fans immediately turned to Twitter, Tumblr and TikTok in support of the queer little show that could.

Creator-showrunner David Jenkins said in the press release, “We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet. Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”

Our Flag Means Death follows the fictionalized relationship between real-life historical pirates Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). After leaving the life of a gentleman to become a pirate, Stede struggles with earning his crew’s respect and comes across the infamous Blackbeard. The two find friendship – and even romance – together on the high seas.

The rest of the season one cast includes Nathan Foad, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Con O’Neill, Vico Ortiz, Samba Schutte and Leslie Jones. At the moment, there’s no word yet on a cast or plot for season two.
